Solar panel cleaning cost in Lahore — 2026 prices and real schedules

Lahore is one of the dustiest cities in Pakistan, and panels here lose output faster than the marketing brochures suggest. Here is what cleaning actually costs in 2026 and how often a real system needs it.

How much dust actually hurts panel output in Lahore

A clean panel in Lahore on a clear May afternoon produces close to its rated output minus the temperature derating. The same panel after 30 days of typical Lahore dust accumulation produces around 8 to 14 percent less. After 60 to 75 days without cleaning, especially during the March-April dust storm season or post-monsoon September haze, the loss climbs to 18 to 25 percent. After bird droppings, pollen build-up from spring tree blossoms, or a Lahore winter fog cycle, individual panels can drop 30 to 40 percent until cleaned.

On a 10 kW system that should produce around 45 kWh on a clear day, 15 percent loss means 6.75 kWh of lost generation per day. At the 2026 LESCO peak slab rate of PKR 60 per unit, that is PKR 405 per day or PKR 12,150 per month in extra grid imports. A monthly cleaning that costs PKR 6,000 pays for itself twice over.

What cleaning costs in Lahore in 2026

Pricing depends on system size and the access difficulty. A clean roof with a regular elevated mount on a single-storey home is cheaper than a tall double-storey with a complicated structure. The numbers below are typical for May 2026, for a panel-only clean using soft brushes and deionised water. Costs include the trip, two technicians, and a basic visual inspection of mounts, cabling, and the inverter screen.

System sizeSingle visit (PKR)Quarterly plan (4 visits/year, PKR)Monthly plan (12 visits/year, PKR)
3 kW (6-8 panels)3,50012,00032,000
5 kW (10-12 panels)4,50015,50042,000
7.5 kW (14-16 panels)5,50019,00052,000
10 kW (18-20 panels)6,50022,50062,000
15 kW (26-28 panels)9,00031,00085,000
20 kW (36-38 panels)12,00041,000112,000

Difficult access (3-storey, restricted parapet, no service walkway) adds PKR 1,500 to PKR 3,500 per visit. Commercial rooftops with 50+ panels and a service walkway are usually cheaper per panel, around PKR 200 to PKR 250 per panel cleaned.

The right cleaning schedule for Lahore weather

Lahore has three distinct dust seasons. February through April is the worst, the dry pre-monsoon stretch when haze and dust storms roll in. The right schedule then is every 2 to 3 weeks. May through August has variable dust, and the monsoon helps wash panels naturally. Two cleanings during these four months is enough. September through November brings post-monsoon haze and brick kiln smoke from the surrounding districts. Monthly cleaning is back on. December through January is fog and lighter dust. One cleaning is fine if it has not been done in November.

An efficient annual schedule for Lahore comes out to 8 to 10 cleanings per year, weighted toward February-April and October-November. That maps to the "monthly plan" pricing in the table above. For families that want a fixed cost predictable rhythm, the 12-visit plan with the installer also includes a free emergency visit if generation drops more than 25 percent unexpectedly.

What method actually works

Two cleaning methods are common in Lahore. The first is dry brushing with a soft microfibre brush on an extension pole. The second is wet cleaning with deionised water and a soft brush. Dry cleaning works for light dust accumulation under 2 weeks. Wet cleaning is needed for anything older, for bird droppings, and for pollen.

Hard tap water should not be used because Lahore tap water has high TDS (around 600 to 1,200 ppm in most of the city). When it dries on the panel surface it leaves a chalky residue that traps further dust and reduces light transmission. The deionised water needed for proper cleaning comes from a portable filter unit the technician brings, or is bought in 20-litre cans at around PKR 350 per can. A 10 kW system needs about 20 to 30 litres of water per cleaning.

Pressure washers should never be used on solar panels. The water pressure can damage the panel-to-frame seal and cause moisture ingress, which leads to delamination over the next 6 to 18 months. That is an expensive panel replacement, not a cleaning saving.

Self-cleaning vs hiring someone

Some homeowners try cleaning panels themselves. For a single-storey home with safe roof access this can work, but there are three risks. First, walking on or near panels can crack them. The panel glass is tempered but not unbreakable, and a worker's weight on the edge or corner can cause hairline cracks that show up months later. Second, hose pressure is a concern as already mentioned. Third, the inspection of mounts, cabling, and the inverter logs is not happening when a family member is cleaning. That inspection has caught a loose DC connection on roughly 1 in 8 visits made by service teams. Loose DC connections cause arcing, which is a fire risk.

Hiring a service team adds PKR 4,500 to PKR 6,500 per visit and reduces all three risks. For most Lahore homeowners that is the better trade.

Annual cost vs generation recovered — the math

Take a 10 kW Lahore system. Without cleaning, annual generation falls from a typical 14,000 kWh to around 11,200 kWh, a 20 percent loss. At PKR 50 to PKR 60 per imported unit, that is PKR 140,000 to PKR 168,000 in extra annual bills. A monthly cleaning plan costs PKR 62,000 per year. The net saving from cleaning is PKR 78,000 to PKR 106,000 per year on a 10 kW system. The ROI on cleaning is roughly 150 to 200 percent annually. Few maintenance activities on a solar system pay back this strongly.

What is included in a cleaning visit

A standard cleaning visit at this pricing includes deionised water cleaning of every panel front face, soft-brush removal of debris from the panel-frame junction, a visual check of the mounting structure for loose bolts or corrosion, a check of DC and AC isolators for visible damage, a check of the inverter screen for error codes, a download of the last 30 days of generation data from the inverter app, and a one-page service report. The visit takes 60 to 120 minutes depending on system size.

Not included: cleaning the panel back side (rarely needed for bifacial panels because ground reflection is what bifacials use), inverter internal cleaning (this needs a separate service and is once every 2 years), and any electrical repair work. Repairs are quoted separately if the inspection finds an issue.

Areas where dust is worst in Lahore

Construction-heavy zones get the most dust. The currently active construction corridors in 2025-26 are the Ring Road extension, parts of DHA Phase 8 and Phase 9 still under build-out, the LDA city expansion, and the Multan Road widening. Homes within 1 km of an active construction site need cleaning every 2 to 3 weeks. The brick kiln belt south of Raiwind and parts of Walton near the ex-airfield also have more particulate.

Areas with lower dust accumulation include the inner DHA phases (1 through 5), Gulberg older blocks with mature tree canopy, and Cantt blocks with limited traffic. Those homes can stretch cleaning intervals to 6 to 8 weeks.

When to skip a scheduled cleaning

If the inverter app shows generation in the last 7 days is within 5 percent of the same week last month (adjusted for weather), the panels do not need cleaning that month. Pushing the cleaning to the next month saves the visit cost. The installer's app or the inverter's web portal should show this comparison. If a homeowner is on a paid monthly plan, this can be discussed with the installer and visits can be paused during summer monsoon weeks when natural rain has cleaned the panels.
