Why cleaning matters more in Lahore than most cities

Three things hit Lahore solar arrays hard:

• Pre-monsoon dust storms (May to June) — fine particle layer.
• Post-monsoon water marks (August to September) — dried mineral residue, hard to remove without proper technique.
• Pollen and bird activity around large trees in DHA, Cantt, Model Town.

An uncleaned panel can lose 1 percent output per week of buildup. A 10 kW system producing 1,500 kWh per month at full output ends up at around 1,200 kWh after three months of neglect. That is real money on the bill.

How cleaning is done

1. System turned off via DC isolator.
2. Visual inspection: hotspots, bird damage, cable wear, mounting tightness.
3. Initial rinse with deionized water (regular tap water leaves mineral marks).
4. Soft-brush scrub along panel grain. Never abrasive, never with detergent.
5. Final rinse and squeegee.
6. Output check after restart to confirm restored production.
7. Brief report on panel condition.

Standard panels handle this routine well. Mono-crystalline tier-1 modules can be cleaned safely for the full 25-year warranty period.

What is NOT included (and why)

• Pressure washing. Most panels are not rated for high-pressure water. Risk of seal damage.
• Detergent cleaning. Leaves residue that attracts more dust.
• Walking on panels. Microcracks lower output for years afterward. Cleaning is always from a ladder or scaffold.

Combining cleaning with maintenance

Most quarterly plans include basic inspections: torque check on mounting clamps, MC4 connector check, breaker trip test, monitoring app review. Catching loose bolts early prevents storm-season damage.
