Solar installation in Cantt, Lahore — what is different here

Cantt is not a normal Lahore neighbourhood. Older grid wiring, larger plot sizes, and an approval layer that DHA and Bahria homeowners never see. Here is what a real install in this part of the city looks like in 2026.

Why Cantt is its own category

Most parts of Lahore Cantt, Sarwar Road, Tufail Road, Sarfraz Rafiqui Road, Gulberg Cantt, Saddar, Walton Cantt, Askari blocks, and the bungalows along the Cavalry Ground side, fall under Military Estates Office (MES) or Cantonment Board jurisdiction. That changes three things compared with a Bahria or Johar Town install. The structure approvals are different, the electrical feeder is often older, and the homes themselves are usually larger with heavier loads. A 5-marla in Johar Town and a 1-kanal in Sarwar Road are not in the same conversation.

The grid side is run by LESCO like everywhere else, so net metering applications still go through the LESCO Mall Road office. What is different is what happens before the panels go up.

The approvals nobody talks about

If the house is on a Cantonment lease, the resident often needs a no-objection from the local Cantonment Board for any rooftop structure. This is the part that surprises homeowners in Askari and on the inside streets near Fortress. The board will ask for a basic structure drawing showing the elevated mounting, the panel layout, and the height above the parapet. In most cases the approval is straightforward and takes 7 to 14 days. The fee in 2026 is small, usually under PKR 5,000.

For serving officers' bungalows on MES property, the approval path is slightly longer because MES also signs off on any modification that touches the roof. The drawing is the same, the time is 2 to 4 weeks. Many homeowners skip this and regret it later when the panels are installed and the board sends a notice. It is cheaper to do it in the right order.

What Cantt loads actually look like

A 1-kanal house off Sarwar Road or Tufail Road with three or four bedrooms, two TVs, a deep freezer plus fridge, six to eight inverter ACs, and a tube well or pressure pump usually runs a summer bill of PKR 90,000 to PKR 160,000. That puts it in the 10 to 15 kW range on solar. A 2-kanal bungalow with eight to ten ACs, a heated pool, and staff quarters can easily push past PKR 220,000 in June and July, and that house often needs 20 to 25 kW.

The smaller Cantt blocks, newer Askari apartments, the Lalazar side, parts of Walton, look more like a normal Lahore home. A 10-marla in those areas usually fits a 7.5 kW or 10 kW system. Apartments in Askari towers cannot install rooftop solar on a private basis at all, since the roof is common property. Those residents are better served by waiting for the society to do a centralised install on the building roof, or by installing a small balcony system that is not grid-tied.

Roof and structure on older bungalows

One thing the survey engineer checks first in Cantt homes is the roof structure. Many of these bungalows were built between 1985 and 2005 with a single RCC slab and a parapet wall, with later additions of a servant quarter or a barsati. The main roof is almost always strong enough. The barsati extensions sometimes are not, and 5 mm thicker box-section purlins are needed. The cost difference is around PKR 25,000 to PKR 40,000 on a 10 kW install.

The other Cantt-specific issue is mature trees. Tufail Road, parts of Abid Majeed Road, and the inner streets of Gulberg Cantt have big old trees that throw shade on parts of the roof in winter mornings or summer evenings. The fix is a half-cell panel layout with optimisers on the shaded string, not a different system size. An optimiser on each of 6 to 10 affected panels adds about PKR 12,000 per panel.

A real BoQ — 10 kW hybrid in Sarwar Road, May 2026

Homeowner: a 1-kanal bungalow, summer bill around PKR 110,000, six inverter ACs, family of five. The system installed is 10 kW hybrid with 10 kWh of lithium for evening AC and outages.

The summer bill after commissioning settled at PKR 18,000 in July 2026, with the AC running until 1 am. That is a PKR 90,000 monthly saving in peak months, and the lithium replaces about 4 hours of UPS or generator running each evening.

Net metering in Cantt — same rules, slightly slower

The LESCO net metering process for Cantt addresses is identical to the rest of Lahore. The applicant files through LESCO's online portal, a feeder check is scheduled, an Additional General Manager (AGM) inspection follows, and the bi-directional meter is installed. Typical timeline in 2026 is 6 to 10 weeks from application to meter installation. For Cantt addresses there is sometimes an extra step where the feeder serving the colony has limited net metering capacity and the application sits in a queue. In those cases the homeowner can still self-consume from day one and queue for export billing separately.

The 2026 net metering tariff for new applicants under the gross billing model pays around PKR 11 per exported unit, against an import rate of PKR 60 plus per unit at the peak slab in Cantt households. The math still works heavily in favour of the homeowner, but the payback on a Cantt 10 kW system is closer to 3.2 years than the 2.5 years quoted for smaller Johar Town installs, because the export tariff is what it is.

Generator coexistence

Almost every 1-kanal-plus Cantt home has a diesel generator, often 15 kVA or higher. A hybrid solar inverter needs to be wired so the generator AVR signal does not confuse the inverter when the gen starts up. The fix is a simple changeover switch and a generator-aware setting on the hybrid inverter. Sungrow, Deye, and Solis 2026 firmware all handle this. The wiring change is about PKR 15,000 and takes half a day. If this is skipped, the inverter throws a fault every time the generator kicks in, and the family thinks the solar system is broken.

Security and site visits

Some inner Cantt streets, sectors close to GHQ, near the airbase side, the Mall Cantt restricted blocks, need the installer's team to be cleared at the boundary check post. The homeowner gives a phone number and a vehicle plate at the gate the day before, the team carries CNICs, and the visit goes through normally. Plan for an extra hour on day one. Equipment delivery trucks sometimes need a separate clearance, so the delivery is usually scheduled one day before the install team arrives.

Mistakes Cantt homeowners make

The first is skipping the Cantonment Board note. The fine for unauthorised rooftop work in 2026 is around PKR 25,000 plus a removal order, and the work has to be re-submitted anyway. The second is choosing a 5 kW system for a house that really needs 10 kW, because the bill in winter looked small. Cantt bills swing wildly between January and July. The right reference is the June or July bill, not the average. The third is buying panels and inverter separately on different warranty terms. When something fails 18 months later, the installer points at the brand and the brand points at the installer. A single-quote, single-warranty install avoids that fight.

How long the install actually takes

From the day the homeowner says yes, a typical 10 kW Cantt install takes 7 to 10 days for physical work, including the Cantonment approval running in parallel. Net metering paperwork runs another 6 to 10 weeks but the system is generating from day one. Most families notice the bill drop on the first month's reading.
