A UPS moves energy, solar creates it
This is the single idea people miss. A home UPS takes units from LESCO at, say, 11 pm, stores them in a battery, and hands about 70 to 80 percent of them back to you at 3 pm the next day when the power is out. You paid the full retail rate for those units, then lost a quarter of them to charging and inverting losses. Your bill goes up, not down.
Solar panels do not store anything. They generate. Every unit made on your roof between 8 am and 5 pm is a unit LESCO never billed you for, at PKR 48 to PKR 65 depending on your slab. Over a year a 5 kW array in Lahore produces roughly 7,500 to 8,500 units.
So the two products are not competitors in the way the showroom on Hall Road presents them. A UPS is a convenience device. Solar is a cost reduction device. A hybrid system happens to be both.
What each one actually does during a Lahore outage
Say the feeder in Johar Town trips at 2:30 pm on a June afternoon.
- With a UPS: the battery kicks in within milliseconds. Fans, lights, TV and the router keep running. The AC does not, because a 1.2 kVA UPS cannot start a compressor. Runtime on two 200 Ah tubular batteries with a normal fan-and-light load is three to five hours. When the grid returns, the UPS spends the next six hours recharging, drawing extra units off your meter.
- With a grid-tied solar system and no battery: nothing works. Anti-islanding protection shuts the inverter down the moment the grid drops. This surprises a lot of first-time buyers.
- With a hybrid solar system and battery: the house switches to battery instantly, and the panels keep charging that battery through the outage because the sun is still out. Runtime is effectively unlimited during daylight and depends on battery size after dark.

Honest cost comparison
Three realistic setups for a 10 marla house running two ACs, a fridge, a deep freezer, ten fans and normal lighting.

Look at the bottom half of that table rather than the top. The UPS is the cheapest thing to buy and the only one that makes your bill worse. It also needs a fresh set of tubular batteries roughly every three to four years, which is another PKR 100,000 each time. Over ten years the UPS route costs about PKR 480,000 in equipment and adds maybe PKR 250,000 to your electricity bills. The hybrid route costs PKR 757,500 once and removes about PKR 2,400,000 of billing across the same decade.
The tubular battery trap
Almost every home UPS in Lahore sits on 200 Ah tubular batteries at PKR 48,000 to PKR 52,000 each. They work. They also need topped-up distilled water every couple of months, they vent hydrogen so they cannot live in a sealed store room, and they lose capacity fast if they get deep cycled during a long summer outage. Partially, and this is where a lot of money gets wasted in this city. Three situations come up in our surveys.
If you own a plain pure sine wave UPS with no solar input, you cannot connect panels to it. The unit has no MPPT and no way to regulate 400 V DC from a string. Some shops will sell you an external PWM charge controller and claim it works. It does, badly, wasting 20 to 30 percent of your panel output and giving you no export ability at all.
If you own a solar-capable UPS with a built-in MPPT, usually rated 1 kW to 3 kW, you can add two to four panels. That is real but small. Four 585W panels give you about 2.3 kW, enough to run daytime fans and lights and charge the battery, not enough to move your bill meaningfully.
If you own tubular batteries and want to move to a proper hybrid setup, the batteries can often be reused for a year or two with a hybrid inverter that supports lead-acid charging profiles. Most 5 kW and 6 kW hybrids do. It is a reasonable way to spread cost.

When a UPS is genuinely the right call
We do tell people to just buy a UPS. It happens in these cases:
- Rented accommodation where you will move within two years and the landlord will not allow roof work
- An apartment with no roof rights, which covers most of the flats off Ferozepur Road and in Gulberg
- A monthly LESCO bill under PKR 8,000, where the savings from solar are too small to justify PKR 700,000
- You only need the router, two lights and a fan to stay alive during short outages, and a 600 VA unit with one battery at PKR 85,000 total solves it
- Cash flow simply does not allow a solar build this year and the house is unlivable without backup
For that last case, look at the 3 kW system pricing before you decide. A small hybrid build is closer in price to a good UPS than most people expect, and it starts paying you back immediately.
Runtime math, so you can size either one
Take a typical Lahore backup load: eight ceiling fans at 75 W, twelve LED lights at 12 W, a fridge averaging 150 W, a router and a TV. That is roughly 950 W continuous.

Tubular figures assume a 50 percent depth of discharge, which is what you should design for if you want the bank to last. Push them deeper and you will be buying replacements in two years instead of four. Lithium is rated at 90 to 95 percent usable, which is why a 2.5 kWh lithium pack matches two tubular batteries despite the smaller headline number. The caveat nobody mentions
A hybrid solar system is more complex than a UPS, and complexity fails in more ways. A UPS has a board, a transformer and a battery. A hybrid system has strings, MPPTs, a BMS talking to the inverter over CAN, DC isolators, surge protection and a net metering interface with LESCO. When something goes wrong you need someone competent, not the nearest electrician. Lahore has plenty of installers who wire a system, take the money and vanish. Second caveat: the February 2026 net billing rules mean exported units are bought back at a much lower rate than what you pay. That pushes the sensible design toward self-consumption and a battery, which is exactly what the hybrid column above assumes. Details in the 2026 net metering changes.
Short answer
If your bill is small and you rent, buy a UPS. If your bill is above PKR 15,000 and you own the roof, skip the UPS entirely and put that money into a hybrid solar system. A hybrid inverter already does the UPS job. Buying both is paying twice for the same function.
