Three architectures in plain language
Strip away the brochures and the difference is where your electricity can go and where it can come from.
On-grid ties your panels straight into the LESCO supply through an inverter. Whatever the house does not use flows backwards through your meter. No battery exists in the system. When LESCO supply fails, the inverter stops within a second, and your house is dark even at noon in June with the panels baking. That surprise catches at least one customer a month.
Off-grid cuts LESCO out entirely. Panels charge a battery bank, the battery runs the house, and the meter is either disconnected or serves a separate circuit. Nothing exports. Nothing imports. You are your own utility, with all the sizing responsibility that implies.
Hybrid sits in the middle and is what most Lahore homes now buy. Panels feed the house first, surplus charges the battery, remaining surplus exports to LESCO. When the grid drops the inverter isolates the house and keeps running off panels plus battery. When the battery is flat and it is raining, LESCO fills the gap.
The decision framework
Run through four questions in this order. Do not start with brand names.
Question one: how many hours is your supply actually out?
Not how many hours you feel it is out. Check for a month. Load shedding in Lahore is wildly uneven by feeder. Parts of DHA and Bahria Town run on commercial or exempt feeders and see under an hour a day. Old inner-city feeders around Mughalpura, Shad Bagh and Misri Shah can see six to eight hours in July, plus unscheduled faults after the first heavy monsoon rain.

Question two: what is your hard budget ceiling?

The battery is the whole story. Panels and structure barely move. If your ceiling is under PKR 500,000 and your feeder is decent, on-grid is a real answer, not a compromise. If it is over PKR 700,000, hybrid almost always wins. Run your own numbers through the system calculator before you shortlist anything.
Question three: can you actually get net metering?
Net metering with LESCO needs a three-phase or single-phase connection in your name, a clear bill history, and a sanctioned load at or above your proposed system size. Three things trip people up in Lahore.
- The connection is in a deceased parent's or a previous owner's name. LESCO will not process until the transfer is done, and that takes weeks.
- The sanctioned load on the bill is 2 kW because it was set in 1998, while you want an 8 kW system. Load enhancement is a separate application.
- The property is a rented portion or a shared meter across two floors, which happens constantly in Township and around Ichhra.
If net metering is not achievable, on-grid becomes pointless. Exporting into LESCO without an approved bidirectional meter means giving power away for free while your meter possibly still runs forward. In that case you go hybrid with export blocked, or off-grid. Question four: what do you need running when the power goes?
Make the list honestly. Lights, fans, router and fridge is a 900 W load and a small battery covers it. Add one 1.5-ton inverter AC and you are at 2,000 W, needing at least 5 kWh to get four usable hours. Add a second AC and a water pump and you are into 10 kWh territory with a 10 kW inverter at PKR 295,000. The battery bank sizing guide walks through the arithmetic.

People ask for off-grid because they want nothing to do with LESCO. Understandable. It is usually the wrong build inside the city, for four reasons.
First, sizing has to cover the worst case, not the average. That means designing for a run of overcast monsoon days in August or a week of thick smog in January when output drops 40 to 60 percent. You end up buying 12 panels and 10 kWh of storage for a house that a hybrid would serve with 9 panels and 5 kWh.
Second, you lose the free backup. A grid connection you keep paying PKR 500 a month in fixed charges for is the cheapest insurance available. Cancelling it to save that is a poor trade.
Third, no export credit at all. Every surplus unit on a bright March afternoon, when your battery is full by 11 am, is simply thrown away. A hybrid at least sells it.
Fourth, when something fails you are dark. No inverter fault tolerance, no fallback. We have replaced a failed off-grid inverter in Johar Town where the family had no electricity for two days waiting on a part.
Off-grid earns its place on farmhouses past Bedian, on tube well sites, on under-construction plots where the meter has not arrived, and on boundary properties where a LESCO connection would cost more in pole and transformer charges than the whole solar system. The upgrade path most people should follow
Buy the hybrid inverter now, the battery later. A 5 kW hybrid at PKR 165,000 costs about PKR 20,000 more than an on-grid unit of the same rating. That PKR 20,000 buys you the option to add storage in year two without throwing away an inverter. An on-grid unit has no battery port and no amount of add-on hardware fixes that. Replacing it later means writing off the entire PKR 145,000.
Phase it like this if cash is tight:
- Phase one: panels, hybrid inverter, mounting, wiring, LESCO net metering. Around PKR 470,000 for a 5 kW build.
- Phase two, six to twelve months later: add 5 kWh of lithium at PKR 285,000 once you know your real evening consumption from a year of data.
- Phase three, optional: a second battery module if summer proves the first one short.
The second phase gets cheaper every year as lithium prices soften, so waiting costs you little.
The honest downside of hybrid
Hybrid systems are more expensive per unit of energy delivered, and the battery is a consumable that will need replacing around year ten to twelve. If your feeder is genuinely good, a battery is dead capital sitting on your wall doing nothing eleven months a year. We have installed hybrid systems in parts of Gulberg where the customer later admitted the battery had cycled maybe thirty times in a year. That is PKR 285,000 spent to avoid roughly forty hours of inconvenience.
Ask your neighbours what their actual outage pattern looks like before you commit to storage. If they shrug and say the light rarely goes, believe them and buy on-grid. You can always add later if you bought the right inverter.
