Ramadan electricity load and solar in Lahore

The month your consumption moves to 4 am. What that does to a solar home, and how to size storage for it instead of guessing.

The load does not grow, it moves

Most Lahore households assume Ramadan raises the electricity bill because everyone uses more. That is only half right. Total units often rise modestly. What changes dramatically is when those units are drawn.

A normal Lahore household peaks twice: mid-afternoon when the ACs are fighting the heat, and again around 9 to 11 pm. During Ramadan the shape becomes something else entirely. There is a sharp spike at sehri between roughly 3:30 and 5 am, a second sharp spike at iftar, and then an extended plateau through taraweeh and into the small hours while the family stays awake.

For a solar home that shift is expensive, because both new peaks sit in hours when the array produces exactly nothing. The panels have their best day of the month while the house is quiet and fasting, and then the house draws hard when the sun is gone.

What the two peaks actually draw

Measured from inverter logs on Lahore homes with a 5kW to 10kW array, here is what a typical family of six looks like during Ramadan.

Add it up and a summer Ramadan day for that household is somewhere around 55 to 75 units. Roughly 40 percent of that is drawn between sunset and sunrise, against maybe 30 percent in a normal month. On unprotected LESCO slabs at PKR 48 to 65 per unit, every unit that moves from day to night costs real money because it cannot be self-consumed from the array.

The iftar peak is the sharp one

Look at the 5:00 to 7:30 pm row. That window has the highest instantaneous load of the whole day, and in a summer Ramadan it lands exactly as the array is falling to near zero. Deep fryer, stove exhaust, microwave, kettle, two or three ACs pulled down before guests arrive, and every light in the house on at once.

That is where undersized inverters trip. A 5kW hybrid inverter has a surge rating, but a household stacking a 2kW fryer onto two running ACs plus a fridge compressor kicking in can exceed it. Battery sizing for the month

The temptation is to buy enough storage to run the entire night from the battery. For most Lahore homes that is financially irrational, because you would be sizing a system around thirty days a year.

A better target is covering the two spikes and letting the flat overnight period come partly from the grid. Realistic options:

Tubular remains an option at PKR 48,000 to PKR 52,000 per 200Ah unit, and for a family that only needs lights and fans through sehri it is the cheapest way in. Winter Ramadan is a different calculation

Ramadan moves about eleven days earlier each year, so the season it falls in shifts over time. That matters more for solar than most people expect.

A summer Ramadan has long production days, high AC load, and a short night. A 10kW array in June generates enough surplus by mid-afternoon to fully charge a 10kWh battery and still export. A winter Ramadan has the opposite profile: production down 40 to 50 percent, smog cutting into it further in December and January, and a long night from an early maghrib to a late sehri.

In a winter Ramadan the AC load largely disappears, which helps. But the array may not generate enough surplus to fill a large battery, which means the battery carries the peaks partly on grid-charged units. That is still useful for load shedding, it just does not save what people expect. The seasonal numbers are in winter solar output in Lahore and smog season output.

The mosque overlap nobody plans for

Something specific happens in Lahore's residential streets during taraweeh. Every mosque in the neighbourhood runs fans, tube lights, sound systems and often ACs simultaneously for around ninety minutes, at exactly the same time every household in the surrounding streets is also running full domestic load.

On older LESCO feeders serving dense areas like Mughalpura, Shad Bagh, Ichhra and parts of Iqbal Town, that coincident load causes visible voltage sag. Lights dim, and a hybrid inverter running in grid-interactive mode may see input voltage drop below its acceptance window and switch to battery. Some inverters cycle in and out repeatedly during that window, which is hard on relays.

Two practical responses. Set the inverter's grid voltage acceptance window and transfer settings appropriately for a weak-feeder area rather than leaving factory defaults, which are written for stronger grids. And if your area has known low-voltage problems, mention it during the site survey, because it changes inverter selection. Feeder loading also means load shedding schedules shift during Ramadan. Exemptions during sehri and iftar hours exist in many areas, but the hours in between can be worse than usual. That is the practical argument for storage in areas with regular outages.

Settings worth changing for the month

A hybrid inverter is configurable, and thirty days is long enough to justify adjusting it.

  1. Set a scheduled grid charge window around midnight so the battery is full before sehri even after a poor production day.
  2. Raise the reserve state of charge so the battery does not drain to floor before the sehri peak arrives.
  3. Shift the washing machine, dishwasher and any water pumping to 11 am to 3 pm when the array has surplus.
  4. Pre-cool bedrooms in the late afternoon on solar rather than after iftar on battery.
  5. Turn the geyser off entirely if the household is not using it, which in a summer Ramadan is often the case.

The pre-cooling point is the highest-value habit change on this list. Running an AC from 4 pm on solar production and letting the room coast through iftar costs almost nothing. Running the same AC from 7 pm on battery costs a chunk of stored energy at the moment you can least spare it.

The honest caveat

Buying a battery specifically for Ramadan does not pay back on its own. Thirty days a year of shifted load is not enough to justify PKR 285,000 to PKR 570,000 of storage on a savings basis alone. Under the current net billing arrangement described in the 2026 net metering changes, the case for storage rests mainly on the gap between the retail rate you avoid and the low export rate you would otherwise receive, plus the value of not sitting in the dark during an outage.

If a battery already makes sense for load shedding and daily evening load, Ramadan strengthens the case and should influence the size you pick. If it does not otherwise make sense, one month a year will not change the arithmetic. That is a straight answer, and any installer telling you a Ramadan battery pays for itself is selling rather than calculating.

A cheaper route exists for many households: keep the existing grid-tied system, shift discretionary load into daylight hours, and accept the grid draw at sehri. It saves nothing on the peaks but it costs nothing either.
