December is the worst month, and it is not close
Every Lahore solar owner discovers this in their first winter. The system that was pushing 38 units a day in May is delivering 14 in mid-December, and the LESCO bill goes back up. Then the panic call comes in, usually asking whether the inverter has failed.
The inverter is almost always fine. Three separate things are stacking on top of each other, and only one of them is smog.
The sun sits lower, so the same panels intercept less direct beam. Days are shorter, roughly 10 hours of daylight in late December against 14 in June, with usable production hours shrinking further. And then particulate haze cuts what does arrive. The general winter picture is covered in winter solar output in Lahore. Numbers from real Lahore arrays
Here is what a properly installed 10kW array in Lahore typically delivers across the year, based on inverter logs from systems across Johar Town, Wapda Town and Cantt.

Read the last column carefully, because that is the actionable one. In August, letting the glass go unwashed for three weeks costs about 5 percent. In December it costs over 20 percent. The same neglect is four times more expensive in smog season.
For a 10kW system in December, a 20 percent soiling loss is roughly 5 units a day, which is 150 units a month. At LESCO unprotected slab rates of PKR 48 to 65 per unit that is PKR 7,200 to PKR 9,750 a month of avoidable loss. A cleaning visit costs a small fraction of that.
Why smog particulate behaves differently from dust
Ordinary Lahore dust in April is coarse and dry. Wind moves a lot of it off the glass, and a tilted panel sheds some by itself. Annoying but self-limiting.
Smog season particulate is fine, it is partly carbonaceous from crop burning and vehicle exhaust, and critically, Lahore winter mornings bring heavy dew. The dew wets the deposited particulate, it dries during the day, and it bonds into a thin grey film that adheres to the glass. Wind does not shift it. A dry wipe smears it.
Anyone who has run a finger across a panel in Ichhra or near Ferozepur Road in late December knows the texture. It is not dust, it is closer to a film of soot. That is why cleaning intervals have to shorten and why the method matters more in winter than at any other time.
The tilt problem in Lahore
Most Lahore residential arrays are mounted at a shallow tilt, often 10 to 15 degrees, because that suits summer sun and keeps structure costs and wind loading down. Shallow tilt means water and particulate sit rather than run off. A steeper winter-friendly tilt would help both the sun angle and the self-cleaning, but it costs more in structure, catches more wind in April storms, and shades the row behind it.
Realistically almost nobody re-tilts seasonally on a Lahore home. It is a real trade-off made at design time, and it is one reason the structure specification should be discussed rather than defaulted.

Two distinct effects, and separating them explains why some smog days are worse than others even at the same AQI reading.
The first is atmospheric. Suspended particulate scatters and absorbs sunlight on its way down. Less light reaches the roof, and more of what arrives is diffuse rather than direct beam. Panels do produce from diffuse light, but at reduced efficiency, and the drop is sharpest for arrays that were designed around strong direct beam.
The second is deposition. Particulate settles on the glass and blocks light at the panel surface. This is cumulative and it is the part you control.
Rough correspondence observed on Lahore rooftops:
- AQI under 100: production close to clear-winter-day expectation.
- AQI 150 to 250: expect 8 to 15 percent below the clear-day figure for the same date.
- AQI 300 to 400: expect 20 to 30 percent below, with a noticeably late start in the morning.
- AQI above 450 with dense fog: some days simply do not produce meaningfully until 11 am.
That last category is the one that catches people out. On a thick fog and smog morning in late December, a system that normally starts exporting by 8:15 am may not cross meaningful output until close to midday. The peak is lower and the day is shorter at both ends.
Cleaning schedule that actually works
The interval that works across Lahore homes, based on what keeps output within a few percent of clean-glass performance:
- November to January: every 2 to 3 weeks.
- February to April: every 4 to 6 weeks, tighter if there is nearby construction.
- May to June: every 4 weeks, dust season.
- July to September: every 6 to 8 weeks, monsoon rain does part of the work.
- October: every 4 weeks, particulate begins building before smog season proper.
Method matters as much as frequency. Use clean water and a soft microfibre or a soft-bristle solar brush, work early morning or after sunset when the glass is cool, and never use detergent, acid, or a hard brush. Scratching the anti-reflective coating is permanent and it also voids the panel warranty, as set out in the warranty checklist.
Do not pour cold water on glass that has been sitting in direct sun. Thermal shock on a hot panel is a genuine way to crack it, and it is a self-inflicted problem that shows up in repair callouts every summer. Cost expectations for professional cleaning are in solar cleaning cost in Lahore.
Neighbourhood quirks
Not all of Lahore soils at the same rate. Homes near the Ring Road, along Multan Road, or close to the brick kiln belt on the city's southern and eastern fringes pick up deposits noticeably faster than interior streets in Model Town or the older tree-lined parts of Gulberg. Anywhere within a few hundred metres of active construction, which describes large parts of Bahria Town and newer DHA phases, cement dust adds a second problem on top of smog.
Tree cover cuts both ways. Shade from a mature tree in Johar Town costs more output than the smog does, and falling leaves in November sit on shallow-tilt panels and create hard shading on individual cells.
Sizing and expectations, set them at design time
The honest position is that you cannot engineer around a Lahore December. You can reduce the soiling component, which is roughly a third of the total winter shortfall, and that is worth doing. The rest is astronomy and atmosphere.
What this means for system design: size for annual consumption, not for peak summer, and accept that December and January will draw from the grid. Under the current net billing arrangement, exported units are worth far less than consumed units, so oversizing an array purely to survive two smog months rarely pays back. A battery changes the picture slightly, but not the way people hope. A battery does not create winter units, it just time-shifts the smaller amount you generate. If your December production is 22 units and your consumption is 35, storage will not close that gap. Run your own annual numbers through the calculator before deciding on size, and if December output is materially below the table above even after a clean, get the strings checked. Persistent underperformance with clean glass usually points at shading, a failed optimiser, or a string fault rather than the weather.
