Getting through the gate before getting on the roof

Lake City sits on Raiwind Road past Bahria Town, and like every managed society in Lahore it controls what enters and what gets built. Before a single panel arrives, three pieces of paper matter.

  1. Installation application to society management. Owner's name, plot number, system size in kW, inverter and panel make, and a roof layout drawing. Management wants to know the array will not overhang the boundary or project above the parapet in a way that spoils the streetscape.
  2. Contractor details and worker gate passes. CNIC copies for the crew, vehicle registration for the delivery truck, and dates. Guards will turn a truck away without this, and a rejected delivery costs a day.
  3. Material entry slip. Panels, inverter, battery, and structure listed by quantity, since gated societies log what comes in and what goes out.

None of this is difficult, but it needs starting three to five working days before the install date. Our office handles the submission as part of the job. What we cannot control is how fast management signs, and in peak season, April through June, that queue gets longer.

Aesthetic conditions that come up

Lake City houses have designed facades, and management occasionally objects to panels visible from the street on the front elevation. The standard fix is placing the array on the rear portion of the main roof and using a low-tilt frame that stays below the parapet line where possible. Low tilt costs a little output, maybe 3 to 5 percent annually versus optimal 25 degree tilt in Lahore, and it is usually a fair trade for a smooth approval.

What Lake City homes actually consume

These are newer, larger, and better appliance-loaded than the older parts of the city. Four to six air conditioners in a 1 kanal house is normal. Add a submersible pump, a water filtration unit, two fridges, a deep freezer, and outdoor lighting on a timer, and the July bill goes past 2,000 units without anyone doing anything unusual.

For a 10 kW build the inverter alone is PKR 295,000, panels for a 10.5 kW array using 645W bifacial modules at PKR 21,000 each come to roughly PKR 340,000, and mounting at PKR 7,000 per kW adds PKR 70,000 before any elevated sections.

Air conditioning is the whole design problem

Sizing solar for a Lake City house is really sizing for AC. A 1.5 ton inverter AC draws roughly 1.1 to 1.5 kW while running steady, more on startup and in the first cooling cycle. Four of them running together in a June afternoon is 5 to 6 kW of continuous load, before the fridge, pump, lights, and everything else.

Daytime is manageable. A 10 kW array in Lahore produces 7 to 8 kW at midday in summer, so the ACs run on solar and the house draws little from LESCO. Night is the expensive part. Backing up two ACs for five hours needs somewhere around 15 kWh of usable battery. At PKR 285,000 per 5 kWh lithium module, that is over PKR 850,000 of storage alone.

Which is why the honest advice to most Lake City clients is to split the goal. Size the array for daytime self-consumption, then add a modest battery, 5 to 10 kWh, sized to run fans, lights, fridge, and one bedroom AC through the evening rather than the whole house all night. Three-phase connections and net metering

Anything above 10 kW in Lahore generally sits on a three-phase LESCO connection, and most larger Lake City houses already have one for their AC load. Three-phase changes the inverter selection and requires load balancing across phases so the net metering credit calculates correctly. Worth being clear about the economics under the 2026 rules. Exported units are credited at roughly PKR 11, while imported units cost PKR 48 to PKR 65 depending on slab. That means a Lake City household with a big array and an empty house during the day exports a lot and earns little for it. Shifting the pump, laundry, dishwasher, and pool filter to daylight hours is worth far more than the export credit. The downside nobody mentions at the sales stage

Lake City is on the city's western edge near Raiwind Road, and that area catches agricultural dust in the dry months plus the full Lahore smog layer from December through February. Output in those months drops 25 to 35 percent from the March baseline, and dirty panels add another 8 to 12 percent loss on top. A large array here needs cleaning every six weeks or so, not twice a year. On a 15 kW array that is a recurring cost worth putting in the budget from day one, and the winter output and monsoon output articles give the month-by-month picture.

The second caveat: a large hybrid system with substantial battery capacity in a Lake City house rarely pays back as fast as a modest system in a smaller house, because so much of the cost sits in storage that only earns its value during outages and evening peaks. Payback on a battery-heavy 10 kW build here typically runs 40 to 55 months, against 30 to 36 months for a well-sized 5 kW build elsewhere. That is still a good investment. It is just not the 18 month story some salespeople tell.
