Solar system for a 1 kanal house in Lahore

Five or six ACs, a three phase connection and a lawn pump. What 12 kW to 15 kW costs, and the design decisions that matter at this size.

What a 1 kanal house in Lahore actually consumes

One kanal is 500 square yards. In DHA Phase 5 and 6, Bahria Town Overseas, Model Town's older blocks and the Cantt area, the standard build is a double storey covering 2,800 to 3,600 square feet with a lawn at the front and a servant quarter at the back. Load looks nothing like a 10 marla house.

Twelve month averages on the houses surveyed run 1,600 to 2,600 units. July on a fully occupied 1 kanal house in DHA touches 3,200 units, which at LESCO's unprotected slab rate of PKR 48 to PKR 65 per unit produces bills north of PKR 150,000 once taxes and fuel adjustment land.

Three phase is the first question, not the last

Most 1 kanal homes in Lahore are on a three phase LESCO connection because the sanctioned load exceeds what a single phase service can carry. Check the bill. If it shows three phase, the solar inverter has to be three phase too. There is no shortcut here, and installers who fit a single phase inverter on a three phase house create two problems at once: the load stays unbalanced across R, Y and B, and the LESCO net metering file gets rejected at the technical review stage.

Three phase changes cost in three ways. The inverter itself is more expensive. The protection kit needs three pole breakers and a three phase surge device. And the backup board has to be built carefully so that whichever circuits go on battery are spread across phases rather than dumped on one. Expect roughly PKR 60,000 to PKR 90,000 of the total to exist purely because the house is three phase.

Some 1 kanal houses, especially older Model Town and Garden Town properties that were built before the AC count climbed, are still on single phase with a 15 kW sanctioned load. Those can take a single phase system, but if the plan includes adding ACs, applying for a three phase upgrade first is cheaper than doing it after the panels are up. The net metering page lists what LESCO asks for on load enhancement.

Roof space is rarely the constraint here

A 1 kanal roof gives 2,000 to 2,600 square feet of deck. At 42 square feet of real footprint per 585W panel, that is space for well over 50 panels, which nobody needs. Sizing on 1 kanal is a load and budget decision.

What does bite is roof geometry. These houses often have a stepped roof with different levels for the lounge, the bedrooms and the mumty, plus a solar water heater already installed, plus overhead tanks in two positions. Panels end up in three or four separate arrays at different heights, which means longer DC runs and more string design work. That is normal and it is factored into the wiring line item.

12 kW or 15 kW

Six ACs plus basement gym and home office18 kW312,250 to 2,520Approaches full offset year round

One thing worth saying plainly: even a 15 kW system will not zero the July bill on a house consuming 3,000 units. It will cut it by two thirds, which on a PKR 150,000 bill is a saving of PKR 100,000 in a single month. That is the point, not a zero bill. If a zero bill is the goal, the honest answer involves changing how the house uses AC, not adding more panels. The 15 kW price article goes deeper on those numbers.

Choosing 645W bifacial panels at PKR 21,000 drops the count to 24 and adds a little morning and evening yield off the reflected light from a white roof coating. That option costs PKR 504,000 for panels, which is effectively the same money for slightly more capacity. Current rates for the common brands are on the Jinko page, the Canadian Solar page and the general panel price page.

Battery strategy for a big house

Fifteen kWh sounds like a lot until it meets a 1 kanal load. Two 1.5 ton inverter ACs plus lights, fans, two fridges and the router draw around 3 kW continuously once the rooms are cold. Fifteen kWh at 90 percent usable gives four and a half hours at that draw. That is midnight to half past four, which is what most owners want.

Trying to back up all six ACs overnight needs 35 to 40 kWh, which is over PKR 2 million of battery alone. Nobody should be sold that without being told exactly what it costs to replace in year ten. A better design picks two or three bedroom AC circuits for backup and leaves the rest on grid, which is how the majority of our 1 kanal jobs in DHA and Bahria Town are wired. Reasoning behind the numbers is in the battery bank sizing guide and the hybrid with battery guide.

The generator that is already in the porch

Nearly every 1 kanal house in Lahore already has a diesel or gas generator with an automatic changeover, and often a separate UPS for the bedrooms. Adding a hybrid solar system to that setup needs the changeover logic rethought, otherwise the inverter and the generator will fight each other at the moment of transfer.

The usual fix is to feed the generator output into the inverter's dedicated generator input, where supported, and to retire the old UPS entirely because the hybrid does its job better. Owners are often reluctant to remove a UPS they paid for. Keeping it means two battery systems charging in series and wasting energy at each conversion, so it is better to sell it on. Comparison detail sits on the IPS versus solar battery page.

Lawn pumps, outdoor lights and the loads nobody counts

A 1 hp lawn pump running two hours a day is 45 units a month. Outdoor lighting at 400W for eleven hours is 130 units a month. A basement dehumidifier through monsoon adds another 60. Together that is 235 units, roughly the entire consumption of a small house, and it never appears on the load sheet because nobody thinks about it.

Two easy wins. Move the lawn pump and any water filling to the middle of the day so it runs directly off panels. Put outdoor lighting on a timer or sensor instead of a manual switch that stays on till the guard remembers. Both cost nothing and are worth about a kilowatt of panels.

The honest downside at this size

A 1 kanal solar system is a two million rupee purchase and the payback is genuinely good, typically 28 to 34 months on the array portion because the household is deep into the expensive tariff slabs. The catch is elsewhere. Big systems on stepped roofs with four separate arrays have more connection points, more places for water to enter during monsoon, and more maintenance. These installs need cleaning every three to four weeks in the dry season and a proper annual inspection, not a look at the app once a year.

The second issue is the battery replacement bill, which arrives eight to twelve years in and will not be small on a 15 kWh bank. Owners should plan for it rather than being surprised. Rates today are on the battery replacement page, and cleaning charges on the cleaning service page.

Booking a 1 kanal survey

Survey fee is PKR 3,000 and it is deducted from the final installation bill. On 1 kanal the engineer needs two hours: measuring the stepped roof levels, mapping shading from the mumty and the neighbouring boundary walls, opening the three phase distribution board, checking phase balance on the existing load, tracing the generator changeover, and confirming the sanctioned load. What comes back is a string layout, a phase allocation plan and a priced BoQ.
