The Askari rooftop is a gift, and installers know it
Ask any crew in Lahore which societies they like working in and Askari comes up fast. The reason is boring and structural. Almost every unit in Askari 9, Askari 10 and Askari 11 was built to a military engineering standard with a flat reinforced concrete slab, a proper parapet, and a staircase mumty positioned to one side rather than dead centre. That combination means a clean, unshaded rectangle of roof, which is exactly what a solar array wants.
Compare that with older parts of the city where a crew spends half a day working around water tanks placed at random, unauthorised extra rooms, and a neighbour's overhanging cantilever. In Askari the layout was decided once and enforced. A 6 kW array of ten 585W panels needs about 320 square feet of usable roof. Most Askari 10 houses on 10 marla have double that available.
The one recurring nuisance is the overhead water tank. In Askari 11 in particular a lot of tanks sit on a raised platform at the north or northeast corner. That shadow moves across the roof in winter afternoons. It has to be plotted during the survey, not guessed at, because a shaded panel string in December can drop a whole array's output by 15 to 20 percent for two hours a day.
Society approval: the part people underestimate
Askari is army housing, and the estate office takes rooftop modification seriously. Nobody is going to stop a homeowner from going solar, but the process is not "call an installer on Monday, panels up on Tuesday". Expect the following.
- A written application to the project or estate office naming the installer, the system size in kW, and the intended structure height.
- A simple rooftop layout drawing. A hand-marked sketch with panel positions and inverter location is normally accepted, though a printed layout gets approved faster.
- Confirmation that the structure will stay within the parapet line and not overhang onto the neighbouring unit or the street.
- In some phases, a height restriction. Raised structures above roughly 4 feet from slab level attract questions. Standard low mounting almost never does.
- A gate entry request for the crew and material vehicle, with CNIC numbers submitted a day or two ahead.
Approval typically comes back in three to seven working days. The delay that actually bites is the material vehicle. Askari gates do not let a loaded Suzuki carry drive in on a verbal request, so panel delivery has to be scheduled against an approved entry slip. Build a day of slack into the plan for that.
What size systems Askari homes actually take
Askari covers a wide range of unit types. Apartments in Askari 11 sit alongside 5-marla and 10-marla houses in Askari 10, and a handful of 1-kanal units. Load profiles differ accordingly.

The 5 kW and 8 kW builds carry most of the volume here. If a household is unsure, the honest test is twelve months of bills rather than one summer bill. 2026 pricing for a typical Askari build
Below is a real bill of quantities for an 8 kW hybrid system with a 5 kWh lithium battery, the most common Askari 10 configuration in the last year. Prices are current Lahore market rates.

Swapping to 645W bifacial panels at PKR 21,000 each raises the panel line but reduces panel count and structure work slightly. Dropping the battery takes roughly PKR 285,000 out and turns the build into a daytime-savings system. That is a legitimate choice for a household that is home mostly in the evening and has tolerable outages.

Askari feeders are generally better maintained than the surrounding areas, and outages here are shorter than in, say, older Mughalpura or parts of Walton. That leads some residents to skip storage entirely. It is a reasonable position, but two things push the other way.
First, under the current net billing rules, a unit exported to LESCO earns far less than a unit consumed at home. Storage turns cheap midday production into expensive evening consumption. Second, Askari transformers do trip in June and July when the whole block runs ACs, and those outages arrive at exactly the hour when a solar array produces nothing.
Which battery type
Lithium has effectively won this argument in Lahore. A 5 kWh lithium pack at PKR 285,000 covers fans, lights, fridge, and a router overnight comfortably, with headroom for a single inverter AC for two to three hours. Pylontech at 3.5 kWh sits at PKR 195,000 and suits a smaller apartment build. Tubular 200Ah at PKR 48,000 to 52,000 per unit still exists and still sells, mainly to buyers with a hard cash ceiling today. Honest caveat: a tubular bank installed on an Askari rooftop store room, unventilated, in a Lahore June, will not last five years. It will last three. If the only available space is hot and closed, lithium is not a preference, it is a requirement. Full hybrid options are covered under hybrid and battery systems.
LESCO net metering from an Askari address
Askari falls under LESCO like the rest of Lahore. The application file needs the electricity bill in the applicant's name, CNIC, sanctioned load documentation, and the installer's equipment details. Where Askari applications get stuck is name mismatch. Plenty of units are held on allotment or occupied by a family member while the meter still carries an earlier allottee's name. LESCO will not process a net metering file against a name that does not match the applicant.
Fix that first, at the sub-division, before any file is submitted. Once names match, the sequence runs demand notice, inspection, and bi-directional meter installation, usually six to ten weeks end to end. What actually goes wrong on Askari roofs
Three failure patterns come up repeatedly on service calls in these phases.
- Waterproofing punctures. Askari slabs usually have a proper waterproof membrane. Drilling anchor bolts through it without resealing causes seepage into the top-floor ceiling by the second monsoon. Every penetration needs a sealant collar. This is not optional work.
- Smog film in December and January. Output drops noticeably. A rooftop array in Askari 11 that made 34 units on a clear November day will make 21 on a heavy smog day in January. Cleaning helps but does not fix the sky. Read winter solar output in Lahore before assuming a shortfall means a fault.
- Inverter placement in a sealed store. Hybrid inverters derate when ambient temperature climbs. Mounting one inside a closed rooftop store in Askari is the single most common cause of "my system underperforms in summer" complaints.
Monsoon wind is the other consideration. Askari roofs are open with little wind break, so the structure needs correct anchoring rather than a token four bolts. The system runs and saves money from day 14. Net metering only changes what happens to surplus units. Nobody should wait on LESCO before switching on.
