Old Lahore construction, lanes a crane will never enter, and meters older than the homeowner. Here is how the job really runs.

Samanabad is an access problem before it is an engineering problem

Ask any installer in Lahore which areas slow a crew down and Samanabad comes up fast. The main road side near Samanabad More is fine. Everything behind it, the lanes running off Poonch Road and the older blocks toward Chauburji side, is a different job entirely. Streets of eight to fourteen feet, houses built wall to wall, electricity poles leaning into the lane with a bundle of cables at head height, and parked motorcycles filling whatever gap remains.

The system design for a Samanabad house is not exotic. A 5 kW hybrid with a battery here is the same electrical design as a 5 kW hybrid in Wapda Town. What differs is getting 600 kg of panels, a 40 kg inverter, and a 60 kg lithium battery onto a third-floor roof without a crane and without scratching a neighbour's car.

How material reaches the roof when no crane fits

Three methods, chosen on the day of survey:

Lithium batteries are the awkward one. A 5 kWh module weighs 45 to 55 kg and must not be dropped or knocked. That gets carried, not hoisted, with three men, which is why a Samanabad hybrid install is quoted with an extra half-day of labour compared to an open-society job.

Old meters, old boards, old wiring

The meter

A good number of Samanabad houses still have the old electromechanical LESCO meter with the spinning aluminium disc. Those meters cannot do bidirectional recording. If the homeowner wants net metering, the meter has to be replaced with a digital one before the application even moves. That is a LESCO process, and in practice it adds two to four weeks to the timeline. Where the house already has a digital meter installed in the last five years, the process is much faster.

The distribution board

Distribution boards in these houses are often a wooden or bakelite board with rewireable fuses, sometimes extended twice over the decades as rooms were added upstairs. A hybrid inverter cannot be tied into that safely. The realistic approach is fitting a new MCB-based board for the solar-backed circuits and leaving heavy legacy circuits on direct supply until the owner is ready to rewire.

The house wiring

Aluminium conductor wiring from the seventies and eighties is still live in parts of Samanabad. It is undersized for modern AC loads and it goes brittle. When a survey finds it, the honest answer is to keep the inverter output on a limited backup board covering lights, fans, fridge, and a few sockets. Trying to run the whole house including two ACs through decades-old aluminium is how houses catch fire, and no discount is worth that.

What a Samanabad system costs in 2026

Prices below are turnkey, including structure, wiring, protection, labour, and commissioning. Net metering paperwork is PKR 15,000 extra where the owner wants it.

Shading in a wall-to-wall neighbourhood

Samanabad has grown vertically. A single-storey house from 1985 now has a three-storey house next door built in 2019, and that changes the sun path across the roof completely. A shadow that clears by 8 am in June can sit on the array until 10:30 am in late December, when the sun is low and to the south.

Two fixes work. Raise the array on an elevated frame so it sits above the shadow line, or split the array into two strings with MPPT separation so a shaded row does not drag down the clean row. Panel-level optimisers exist but are rarely worth their cost on a 3 kW to 5 kW residential system in this market. What matters more is that the surveyor stands on the roof and traces the shadow properly rather than assuming.

A related note on Samanabad specifically: many roofs carry a neighbour's cable TV or internet line strung across them. Those cast a thin moving shadow and, more importantly, get in the way of the mounting frame. Sort out who owns the cable before installation day, not during.

Load shedding and why hybrid is the default here

Feeders in older Lahore neighbourhoods still see rotational load management in peak summer, and unannounced tripping during a heatwave is common. That is why almost nobody in Samanabad installs a plain on-grid system. A hybrid inverter with even a small battery keeps fans and lights alive during a cut and lets the house stop depending on a separate UPS.

Homes here that already own a UPS and a couple of tubular batteries often ask whether the existing bank can be reused. Sometimes yes, if the batteries are under two years old and the hybrid inverter supports 48V configuration matching the string. The honest downside

Samanabad installs cost slightly more than the same system in an open society, and the difference is not profit. Manual lifting, restricted material delivery, extra structure to clear shading, and frequently a new distribution board add PKR 25,000 to PKR 60,000 to the same nominal system size. Any installer quoting a Samanabad address at exactly the same rate as a Bahria Town address has either not seen the street or plans to cut something on site.

The other caveat is roof space on the 3 marla and 4 marla plots that make up a lot of the older lanes. On those, 2.5 kW to 3 kW is the honest ceiling, and that covers a chunk of the bill rather than all of it.
