Solar warranty checklist for Pakistan buyers

Five separate warranties hide inside one solar quote. Here is what each one covers, who pays, and which clauses quietly void the rest.

One system, five different warranties

Ask a Lahore homeowner what warranty their solar system carries and the answer is usually "25 years". That single number is doing an enormous amount of work, and it is covering exactly one component under exactly one condition.

A typical hybrid system has panels, an inverter, a battery, a mounting structure and the installation labour that joins them. Each of those has its own warranty, its own duration, and its own party who actually pays if something fails. Confusing them is why claims get refused.

WarrantyTypical termWho paysWhat it covers

Panel performance25 to 30 yearsManufacturer via importerOutput falling below the published degradation curve
Inverter5 to 10 yearsBrand distributor in PakistanBoard failure, fan, display, firmware faults

What 25 years actually promises

The performance warranty is a curve, not a guarantee that panels keep working. A typical Tier-1 N-type module warrants roughly 1 percent degradation in year one, then about 0.4 percent per year after that, landing near 87 to 88 percent of nameplate power at year 25.

Two things follow. First, a panel producing 90 percent of rated output in year twelve is performing exactly as promised, so there is no claim. Second, to prove a claim you need a measured output figure attributable to that specific panel, in specified conditions, compared against the warranted curve.

That second requirement is where Pakistani claims collapse. Nobody has baseline data. The panel was never individually measured at commissioning, so there is nothing to compare against a decade later. The fix is boring and cheap: at commissioning, ask the crew to record string voltage and current at solar noon on a clear day and note it on the handover sheet. Ten minutes of work that makes a future claim arguable instead of hopeless.

The clauses that void it

Panel performance warranties in Pakistan are commonly voided by things installers do routinely:

Frame drilling is the most common one on Lahore rooftops. It is quick, it is convenient on an awkward parapet, and it voids the warranty on that panel. Watch for it during installation.

Who actually honours warranties in Pakistan

Here is the chain in practice. Your installer files the claim with the importer. The importer files with the manufacturer's regional office. The manufacturer approves or refuses. If approved, a replacement panel ships with the importer's next container, which can be three to five months out.

Your installer does not fund this. He administers it. That means his willingness and his ability to still be in business are worth more than the paper term. A five-year workmanship warranty from an outfit that started trading last year is a weaker promise than a two-year warranty from a company that has been running installs across Lahore for a decade.

Practical filter: ask which importer supplies the brand, and confirm that importer directly. Brands with established Pakistan channels, including the ones covered in the Inverex, Growatt, Solis and Huawei inverter guides, differ enormously in turnaround. Inverex and Solar Max have physical service points in Lahore. Huawei routes through Karachi, which adds weeks to any swap.

Inverter warranty is where the money is

Panels almost never fail. Inverters do. Across eleven years of Lahore installs, the single most common out-of-pocket repair is the inverter, and the second is the battery. A 5kW hybrid inverter costs PKR 165,000 and a 10kW unit PKR 295,000, so a failure in year six with a five-year warranty is a real financial event.

Points to nail down before purchase:

  1. Is the stated warranty 5 years standard or 5 years extendable to 10 for a fee, and what does the extension cost?
  2. Is it a repair warranty or a replacement warranty? Repair means your system is down while a board is fixed.
  3. Is there a loaner unit policy? Some Lahore distributors provide one, most do not.
  4. Does the warranty require registration within a set window after commissioning? Many do, and missing it is a common way buyers lose cover.
  5. Who pays transport of the faulty unit to the service centre?

Registration is worth repeating. Several brands require online registration within 30 to 90 days of installation. If your installer does not do it and you do not know it exists, the warranty may sit at the shorter default term. Ask for the registration confirmation as part of handover.

Battery warranty and the cycle count trap

Lithium battery warranties are written as "10 years or 6,000 cycles, whichever comes first". In Lahore that second number matters more than people expect.

A household using its battery for evening load only, one cycle a day, reaches 6,000 cycles in about 16 years, so the 10-year term binds. A household in an area with heavy load shedding running two partial cycles a day gets there in around 8 years, so the cycle count binds first. Households that deliberately cycle deep during summer AC load hit it sooner still.

Also check the capacity threshold. Most warranties promise 70 or 80 percent of original usable capacity at end of term. A 5kWh battery delivering 3.6kWh in year nine may be within warranty even though it no longer covers your evening load. Sizing guidance for this sits in the battery bank sizing guide, and replacement economics are covered in battery replacement in Lahore.

Tubular batteries are a different conversation entirely. Warranties there are usually 12 to 24 months with pro-rata terms, and at PKR 48,000 to PKR 52,000 per 200Ah unit the replacement cycle is short enough that warranty barely features. The comparison in lithium versus tubular lays out the ten-year cost.

Workmanship warranty, the one that gets used

In the first two years after installation, almost every problem is workmanship, not equipment. Loose MC4 connectors that arc. A DC cable run across a hot roof slab without conduit. Water tracking down an anchor bolt into a bedroom ceiling in the first heavy monsoon spell. A clamp that was never torqued and works loose in the April wind.

None of that is covered by any manufacturer. It is covered only by the installer, and only if it was written down. The clause should specifically name roof penetration and waterproofing, because that is the failure with the highest cost and the most finger-pointing.

A reasonable workmanship clause reads something like: two years covering structure integrity, all DC and AC terminations, earthing continuity, and water ingress at any penetration made by the installer, with a response commitment of 48 hours within Lahore. Get the response time in there. A warranty with no response commitment is a promise to eventually turn up.

Documents to keep in one folder

Whatever else you do, keep these together, scanned, and backed up. Warranty claims in Pakistan die on missing paperwork more than on refused terms.

The caveat worth saying plainly

Warranty in Pakistan is weaker than warranty in Europe, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Replacement panels arrive months late. Distributors change hands. Some brands that were widely sold in Lahore five years ago no longer have any local presence, which leaves those customers holding paper with nothing behind it.

The realistic defence is not a longer warranty term. It is buying brands with a genuine Pakistan office, keeping your serial records, and using an installer who will still exist. Judge a warranty by who is standing behind it, not by the number printed on it. The questions in how to choose a solar installer in Lahore are built around exactly that test, and the pricing sanity check in installation cost for 2026 will tell you whether a quote has enough margin in it to fund any after-sales service at all.

For a new build, the installation service page and the hybrid and battery page set out what is included as standard. Homes across Wapda Town, Model Town and Bahria Town get the same written terms. If you are unsure about existing equipment, a diagnostic visit can establish whether a fault is a warranty claim or a workmanship problem before you approach anyone.
