The question people actually ask

Almost nobody walks into our office on Mohni Road and asks about kilowatt hours. They ask something simpler. The lights went at 2 pm in June, the house got to 41 degrees inside, and they want to know whether to buy a generator or go solar. Both fix the same symptom. They do it in completely different ways and at completely different long-run costs.

A generator makes electricity by burning fuel you keep paying for. Solar makes electricity from a roof you paid for once. That is the whole argument in two sentences, but the details decide it, and in a few situations the generator genuinely wins.

Cost per unit, the only number that settles it

Even the friendliest generator number is roughly ten times the cost of solar used straight off the roof. Push solar through a battery, which is the fair comparison for backup, and it is still five to eight times cheaper than a petrol set.

Where those generator numbers come from

A 2.5 kVA petrol generator in a Model Town house typically runs 1.1 to 1.4 litres an hour with a fridge, a few fans and lights on it. That yields maybe 1.2 to 1.6 usable units. At PKR 272 a litre you are paying over PKR 200 for something LESCO would have sold you for PKR 55. Noise, neighbours and the Lahore reality

Sound is the complaint that turns generator owners into solar customers. An open-frame 5 kVA petrol set sits at 92 to 96 decibels at one metre. In a Johar Town street where houses share a boundary wall and bedroom windows face the side alley, that is not a small problem. Canopied diesel units drop to about 68 to 72 decibels, which is tolerable outdoors but still audible through a single-glazed window at 3 am.

Solar with a battery makes no sound at all. The inverter fan runs during heavy load and that is it. Customers in Gulberg and Model Town, where plots are tight and older houses have generators sitting in the front car porch, mention this before they mention money.

There is also the exhaust. Carbon monoxide from a generator parked in a covered porch or a basement stair has killed people in this city. Every winter there are cases. A generator needs genuine open-air placement with clearance, not a corner behind the gate.

Maintenance, and what actually breaks

Here is the honest maintenance picture from the field.

The killer for generators in Lahore is irregular use. A set that sits idle from October to May develops stale fuel and gummed jets, then refuses to start on the first hot day of June. Where the generator still wins

This is the part most solar companies skip. There are four situations where we tell people to keep the generator.

1. Big motor starting loads

A submersible tube well, a commercial water pump, a lift motor, or an old non-inverter 2-ton AC compressor pulls a surge four to six times its running current. A 5 kW hybrid inverter with a modest battery bank will trip. You can solve it with a bigger inverter and more battery, but the cost of doing so may exceed what a generator costs. 2. Outages longer than the battery can cover

If your feeder goes down for eight to twelve hours during a monsoon fault, and it is also a cloudy day so the array is producing 25 percent, a 5 kWh battery will not carry a whole house through. 3. No roof

Apartments in Gulberg and rented portions in Township have no usable roof rights. Solar needs area. A generator needs a corner. That is the end of the discussion for many tenants.

4. Rare, brief use

If the power in your area goes out for one hour a month, a PKR 90,000 petrol set that runs twelve hours a year is cheaper than a battery bank you paid PKR 285,000 for. Solar is still worth it for the bill savings, but the battery half of the argument disappears.

The setup most Lahore homes end up with

After eleven years of installs across this city, the pattern that works best for a home with real outages is a hybrid solar system with battery as the primary source, LESCO as the fallback, and the old generator kept in the garage for the rare bad day. Nobody sells the generator in year one. By year three most people have, because they have not started it in eighteen months.

One honest caveat

Solar will not save you from a bad install. We see systems in DHA and Bahria Town where the array was crammed into a shaded corner behind a water tank, or where the battery was undersized to hit a price point, and the owner is back on the generator by July. A generator is forgiving of sloppy work. Solar is not. Shading, string layout, cable sizing and battery capacity all have to be right or the system underperforms in exactly the months you needed it. That is an argument for choosing the installer carefully, not for buying a generator, but it is real and worth saying out loud.

Quick verdict

It loses on upfront price and on the ability to run a tube well at 4 am in the rain. Pick based on which of those matters in your house.
