How to choose a solar installer in Lahore

Twelve questions that separate a real installer from a phone number with a Facebook page. Plus what belongs in a written quote.

2026 Updated 9 min read

The problem is not price, it is who shows up in year three

Panels are a commodity now. Almost every seller in Lahore is buying from the same handful of importers, and the rate difference between two quotes for identical Tier-1 585W panels is rarely more than PKR 800 per panel. So price is not where buyers get hurt.

Buyers get hurt on the parts nobody photographs. Cable gauge. Clamp torque. Earthing. Whether the DC run from the roof to the inverter was done in UV-rated conduit or ordinary PVC pipe that turns brittle after two Lahore summers. And most of all, whether anybody picks up the phone in November 2028 when the inverter throws a fault code at 6 pm.

After eleven years of installs across Lahore, the pattern is boring and consistent. The systems that fail early were not sold by criminals. They were sold by people who quoted a number over the phone, never climbed the roof, and disappeared into a different business line the following year.

Twelve questions to ask before signing anything

Ask these on a call. Write the answers down. Any installer who gets irritated by question four is telling you something useful.

  1. How many years have you been installing in Lahore specifically, and can you name three completed sites in my sector or phase?
  2. Who does the physical work, your own team or a subcontracted crew hired per job?
  3. What panel model and exact wattage will be on my roof, and will the delivery challan match that model number?
  4. What inverter brand and model, and where is its nearest service centre in Lahore?
  5. Is the structure L2 angle iron or IPN, is it hot-dip galvanised or just painted, and what height above the roof slab?
  6. What DC cable size are you using, and is it double-insulated solar cable or building wire?
  7. Are DC and AC surge protection devices included, or extra?
  8. What is your workmanship warranty in years, and does it cover roof leakage caused by your anchors?
  9. Who files the LESCO net metering application, and what happens if the application is rejected?
  10. What is the payment schedule, and what triggers each instalment?
  11. If a panel underperforms in year four, who handles the claim with the manufacturer, you or me?
  12. What does your first free service visit include and when does it happen?

A serious installer answers all twelve in one sitting. Question six is the fastest filter. If the answer is vague, the quote is probably hiding cheap wire, and cheap wire is where efficiency quietly leaks for twenty years.

What a real quote contains

A quote that fits in a WhatsApp message is not a quote, it is a teaser. A proper bill of quantities for a Lahore home runs to at least fifteen lines. Here is what a 5kW hybrid BoQ should look like with 2026 Lahore rates.

Line itemSpec that must be writtenTypical 2026 rate
Solar panelsBrand, model, watt, count, N-type or P-typePKR 19,500 per 585W panel
Hybrid inverterBrand, model, kW, phase, warranty yearsPKR 165,000 for 5kW
Lithium batterykWh, chemistry, cycle rating, BMS brandPKR 285,000 for 5kWh
Mounting structureStandard or elevated, galvanised or paintedPKR 7,000 per kW standard
Elevated structureHeight in feet, wind load ratingPKR 12,000 per kW
Electrical kitBreakers, SPD, fuses, DB, earthing rodPKR 35,000
WiringDC 90m plus AC 20m, size in sq mmPKR 25,000
Installation labourDays on site, crew sizePKR 20,000
Net meteringApplication, inspection, meter follow-upPKR 15,000

Compare that against the article on solar installation cost in Lahore for 2026 to see whether the totals you are being quoted sit inside the normal band. A complete 5kW hybrid with battery installed should land roughly between PKR 700,000 and PKR 900,000. Anything far below that is missing something you will pay for later.

Two lines people forget to check

Cable length is the first. Quotes assume a standard run of about 90 metres DC. If the inverter is going in a store room on the ground floor and the panels are on a third-storey roof in Iqbal Town, that run gets longer and the cost goes up. Get the assumed length written down.

The second is the earthing rod. In older Lahore neighbourhoods like Mughalpura, Misri Shah and parts of Shad Bagh, the soil around the boundary wall is dry and full of construction rubble, so a single 4-foot rod gives poor resistance. A proper job may need a deeper pit with bentonite. That is a genuine extra cost, not a scam, but it should be discussed before the crew arrives.

Warranty in writing, or it does not exist

Verbal warranty is worth nothing once the salesman changes his SIM. There are three separate warranties in every solar job and buyers routinely confuse them.

Workmanship is the one that matters most in the first two years and the one most often left out of the paperwork. Read the full solar warranty checklist for Pakistan buyers before you sign, because the wording differences are not cosmetic.

Site survey red flags

The survey is the best free audit you will get of the installer. Watch what the engineer actually does on your roof.

Good signs: he walks the roof and marks shadow paths from the water tank, stairs block and the neighbour's parapet. He opens your main DB and photographs the breaker rating. He asks how many ACs run at 2 pm versus 2 am. He checks whether the roof slab has an existing waterproofing layer he must not puncture. He asks about your LESCO connection type and sanctioned load.

Bad signs are just as clear. He never leaves the drawing room. He quotes a system size before seeing a single bill. He says net metering approval takes "one week, guaranteed" when the Gulberg and Model Town sub-divisions have been running four to ten weeks all year. He offers a discount that expires today. He cannot tell you the panel model number.

One more that trips people up in Bahria Town and DHA: society bylaws. Some phases restrict structure height above the parapet or require approval for anything visible from the street. An installer who has actually worked in your phase will raise this unprompted. One who has not will find out on install day and then ask you to sort it out.

Payment structure that protects you

The safest structure used across most Lahore jobs looks like this.

  1. 30 to 40 percent on order confirmation, which locks equipment pricing.
  2. 40 percent when panels, inverter and battery are physically delivered to your address and you have photographed the serial numbers.
  3. 20 percent on commissioning and successful load test.
  4. Remainder on net metering application submission with the tracking number handed to you.

Photographing serial numbers at delivery takes ten minutes and it is the single highest-value thing a buyer can do. It is also the only way to later verify panels against the manufacturer database, which the guide on spotting fake solar panels in Pakistan covers in detail.

The honest downside nobody mentions

A good installer is not the cheapest, and the gap is real. Expect to pay 8 to 15 percent more than the lowest quote in your WhatsApp inbox. On a 10kW build that is PKR 100,000 to PKR 200,000 of difference, which is not trivial money.

Whether it is worth paying depends on your situation. If you are a landlord installing on a rental property you plan to sell in three years, the cheap build may genuinely be the rational choice. If this is the house you will live in for the next twenty years and you are adding a lithium battery to it, that premium buys you someone who answers the phone. There is no universal answer, and any installer who tells you otherwise is selling.

Cross-check the numbers yourself

Before you take any quote seriously, do thirty minutes of homework. Run your consumption through the solar calculator to get an independent system size. Read the current panel prices in Lahore today and the lithium battery price list so you know what the raw material actually costs. If you are comparing hybrid against grid-tied, the hybrid and battery service page explains where the extra cost goes.

Then look at how many companies you are really comparing. The overview of solar installation companies in Lahore is a useful reference point for what the market looks like. For a fixed budget with no net metering, the on-grid and off-grid routes have very different maintenance profiles, and the same is true across areas: a Johar Town flat roof and a Wapda Town sloped canopy are not the same job.

Finally, ask what happens after. Panels in Lahore need cleaning far more often than the brochures suggest, and an installer who also runs cleaning and repair work is far more likely to still be reachable in year five.
