Mono vs poly solar panels in Pakistan

The comparison everyone still searches for, answered honestly: poly has effectively left the Lahore market, and here is why that happened and what it means for your roof.

The short version

Polycrystalline panels are no longer a serious option in Pakistan. Walk down the solar market on Hall Road or through the dealers off Ferozepur Road and you will struggle to find new poly stock in any meaningful quantity. What you will find is old inventory, refurbished modules, and the occasional container of low-grade imports aimed at buyers who searched for the cheapest rate per watt.

Monocrystalline won because the cost gap closed. In 2018 poly was genuinely cheaper per watt and it made sense on a big flat roof. By 2023 the difference had shrunk to a few rupees. By 2026 mono is cheaper per watt in most sizes because the entire global supply chain converted to it, leaving poly as a low-volume specialty product with worse economics.

What the two words actually mean

Both panel types are silicon. The difference is how the silicon ingot was grown before it was sliced into wafers.

Monocrystalline cells come from a single continuous crystal pulled slowly out of molten silicon. The result is uniform, so electrons move through it with less resistance. Under the glass a mono panel looks black, with cells that have chamfered corners.

Polycrystalline cells come from molten silicon poured into a mould and allowed to cool into many small crystals. It is faster and cheaper to make, but the boundaries between those crystal grains scatter electrons and cost you efficiency. Poly panels look blue and have a visible flecked pattern.

Efficiency and the roof area math

This is the part that actually matters in Lahore, where roof space is limited by water tanks, stair blocks, parapets and the neighbour's boundary wall.

On a typical 10 marla Lahore rooftop you have maybe 45 to 55 square metres of genuinely usable, unshaded area once you subtract the tank, the stair cabin and the setback from the parapet on the shaded side. A 33 square metre poly array eats almost all of it. A 24 square metre N-type array leaves you room to add 2 kW later when your daughter's family moves into the upper portion.

Structure and labour scale with panel count, not watts

Seventeen panels instead of nine means nearly double the rails, double the clamps, more DC cable runs and more roof penetrations. Mounting at PKR 7,000 per kW is quoted per kilowatt, but on a poly build with lower watts per module the structure cost per kW rises in practice because you are supporting more frames for the same output. Add the extra labour and the poly build ends up costing more to install for identical generation.

Price reality in Lahore right now

Current rates for new Tier-1 stock:

Poly, where you can find it at all, sells as used or B-grade stock at PKR 28 to PKR 35 per watt for panels that are five to eight years old and already three to five percent degraded. That is not a bargain. You are paying near-new prices for a panel with a shorter remaining life, no valid manufacturer warranty in Pakistan, and worse behaviour in heat. Heat behaviour in a Lahore summer

Panel ratings are measured at 25 degrees cell temperature. On a Lahore rooftop in mid June, with ambient at 44 degrees and no wind, cell temperature reaches 65 to 72 degrees. Every panel loses output as it heats, and the rate of loss is the temperature coefficient.

Older poly modules typically sit at minus 0.40 to minus 0.45 percent per degree. Modern mono PERC is around minus 0.35 percent. N-type TOPCon is around minus 0.29 to minus 0.30 percent. At a 45 degree rise above test conditions that difference works out to roughly 6 to 7 percent more output from N-type than from poly, precisely during the hours when your ACs are running hardest. Low light and cloudy days, the poly myth

An old claim in the market says poly performs better in cloudy or diffuse light. It was never really true and it is not true now. Half-cut cell architecture and multi-busbar designs on current mono panels handle partial shading and low irradiance better than any poly module ever did. Where poly still appears, and whether to buy it

Four situations bring poly panels across our path in Lahore.

For a house that will run for the next twenty five years, no. Buy new mono. The difference in lifetime output on a 5 kW build is on the order of 25,000 to 35,000 units, which at PKR 50 a unit is over a million rupees of value for a purchase price difference of maybe PKR 60,000.

An honest caveat about mono

Mono is not immune to bad practice. The bigger risk in Lahore today is not poly versus mono, it is fake or downgraded mono. We have opened cartons labelled 585W that measured 510W under test, and seen counterfeit serial stickers on panels that came from an unknown line. A genuine Tier-1 panel comes with a serial you can verify with the manufacturer, a flash test report for the batch, and an importer who will still exist in five years.

Second caveat: bigger panels are heavier and more awkward. A 645W bifacial module weighs around 32 kg and measures over two metres. On the narrow spiral stairs common in older Gulberg and Garden Town houses, getting them to the roof is a genuine job, occasionally requiring a crane or a rope hoist from the street.
