What a bifacial panel is
A normal module has an opaque white or black backsheet. A bifacial module replaces that with a second sheet of glass or a transparent backsheet, and the cells are wired so light hitting the rear also produces current. Anything bouncing off the surface below the array contributes.
The physics is real. The marketing is not. Rear side efficiency is typically 70 to 80 percent of front side efficiency, and the rear only ever sees reflected light, which on a grey concrete roof is a small fraction of what the front receives. That is where the gap between the datasheet claim and your actual meter reading comes from.
The three things rear gain depends on
Reflectivity of the surface beneath
Albedo is the share of light a surface bounces back. Lahore rooftops vary enormously.

Most Lahore roofs are grey concrete that has weathered through six or seven monsoons and a decade of smog deposition. Assume the middle of that table unless you plan to do something about the surface.
Height above the surface
The rear side needs room for light to spread and reach it. Below about 30 cm of clearance the rear is looking at its own shadow for most of the day. The relationship is steep at first and then flattens.

This is why the structure choice decides everything. A standard mounting frame at PKR 7,000 per kW puts panels roughly 25 to 40 cm off the slab. A raised structure at PKR 12,000 per kW puts them 1.5 to 2.5 metres up, over a car porch or as a walkable canopy. On a 6 kW build that difference is PKR 30,000. If you are not willing to spend it, bifacial modules are not worth buying.
Row spacing and self-shading
Packed rows shade each other's backs. On a tight Lahore roof where the installer has crammed panels edge to edge to fit 6 kW into 26 square metres, the rear faces of the middle rows see almost nothing. Spread rows out and you lose capacity in a place where capacity is already scarce. That trade-off is real and it is the main reason we do not specify bifacial on small crowded roofs.

Take a 6.45 kW build, ten panels, on a 10 marla house in Wapda Town.

The extra PKR 27,900 buys about 700 units a year. At a blended value near PKR 45 a unit that is PKR 31,500 annually, so payback on the upgrade is under a year. On those assumptions bifacial is clearly worth it.
Now change one assumption. Keep the standard mounting because the roof cannot take a raised frame, skip the white coating, and the gain falls to 3 percent. That is 280 extra units a year, or PKR 12,600, against zero extra cost since the panels themselves are the same price per watt. Still positive, but marginal enough that panel availability and warranty matter more than the bifacial label.
Change it once more. Suppose your installer charges a genuine premium for the bifacial modules, say PKR 24,000 each rather than PKR 21,000, and mounts them flat. Now you have paid PKR 30,000 extra for essentially no gain. That happens in Lahore constantly. Run the sums on the calculator before agreeing.
Where bifacial genuinely earns its money in Lahore
- Car porch canopies. Panels two and a half metres up over a light-coloured driveway. Common in DHA and Bahria Town where the porch floor is pale tile or polished concrete. This is the best bifacial application in the city.
- Ground mounts on farmhouses. Bedian Road, Barki Road, and the plots past Raiwind. Plenty of height, plenty of space between rows, and gravel or pale soil underneath.
- Commercial shed roofs with white sheeting. Factories in Sundar and Kot Lakhpat with light-coloured metal roofing already have the albedo. Adding clearance costs very little on a metal purlin structure.
- Terrace canopies that double as shade. The panels shade the terrace and the pale floor bounces light back up. Two benefits from one structure.
When to skip them
Three situations where we tell customers to buy standard monofacial modules and put the money elsewhere.
A flush-mounted array on a sloped tin or concrete roof has nowhere for light to come from. The rear glass is decorative. Buy monofacial, spend the difference on a bigger battery from the lithium battery price list.
A crowded small roof where every square metre is already committed. Widening row spacing to feed the rear faces costs you more capacity than the rear ever returns. A 5 marla house in Johar Town or Model Town is usually in this category, and the N-type panel route serves that roof better.
Where the roof will be used. Families dry clothes, keep charpais, store things and use the roof in winter. A raised structure at 2 metres is fine. A structure at 60 cm makes the roof useless and gets you a complaint from the household within a month.
Practical problems that come up on site
Dust changes the sums
Lahore dust settles on the roof surface below the array too. A white coating applied in March is grey by August unless somebody washes it. That reflective surface is a maintenance item, not a one-time purchase. Our cleaning service handles the panels, but the roof beneath needs a rinse as well if you want the rear gain you paid for. Current clipping at the inverter
Rear gain raises string current. If a 6 kW inverter's MPPT is rated to 16 amps per input and your string already delivers 15.5 amps front-side, the rear contribution has nowhere to go. Peak sun hours in May and June are exactly when this bites. Check the inverter datasheet against the string design, not just the total kW. Clamps and glass edges
Glass-glass modules crack at the edge if clamped with the wrong hardware or over-torqued. We have replaced panels in Gulberg where a crew used standard clamps and cracked three modules in the first monsoon storm through thermal stress. Bifacial mounting hardware costs more for a reason.
The honest verdict
Bifacial panels are not a trick, but the headline gains quoted in the market are for laboratory conditions with a highly reflective ground and generous clearance. On a real Lahore rooftop expect 3 to 8 percent. That is worth having when it comes almost free, because the 645W bifacial module at PKR 21,000 is priced at about the same rupees per watt as the 585W monofacial at PKR 19,500.
The moment somebody asks for a meaningful premium on the panels, or the roof cannot take a raised structure, buy monofacial and stop thinking about it. Panel choice is a small lever. Shading, string design, correct inverter sizing and battery capacity are the big ones, and they decide whether your system meets expectations far more than what is printed on the back of the glass.
