There is almost no such thing as a counterfeit panel
Start with the honest version, because the word "fake" gets thrown around loosely in Pakistan. Nobody is building solar panels in a workshop in Lahore and printing a Jinko sticker on them. Making a laminated glass panel needs a factory line worth millions of dollars.
What actually happens is more mundane and more expensive for the buyer. Real panels from real factories arrive here after failing the factory's own quality gate. They get sold as if they passed. Sometimes the labels are swapped so a 545W panel wears a 585W sticker. Sometimes a genuine A-grade box is opened and half the pallet is quietly substituted before it reaches your roof.
So the question is never "is this panel a forgery". The question is "is this specific panel, with this specific serial, the grade and wattage I paid for". That is a much easier thing to test.
A-grade, B-grade and the third category nobody names
Panels come off the line and get sorted.

B-grade is not a crime and it is not worthless. On a shed roof, a tube well, or a budget off-grid build where nobody is applying for net metering, B-grade panels bought knowingly at a B-grade price can be a reasonable trade. The problem is category four, where B-grade is priced and warranted as A-grade.
Relabelled stock is the one that hurts most, because it looks perfect. The glass is clean, the frame is straight, the label says 585W. The panel produces 540W on a good day. Across 18 panels that is roughly 800W of missing capacity, which on a Lahore roof works out to about 3.5 units a day and around PKR 5,000 a month at unprotected LESCO slab rates of PKR 48 to 65 per unit.
Check one: the serial number, in two places
Every genuine panel carries its serial in at least two locations. One is printed on the label attached to the rear backsheet, near the junction box. The other is a small barcode strip laminated inside the panel itself, usually visible through the glass near a corner cell or along the edge.
Those two must match. On relabelled panels they frequently do not, because the rear label is the easy one to swap and the internal strip is sealed under glass. This check costs nothing and takes about forty seconds per panel.
Then verify the serial upstream. Longi, Jinko, JA Solar, Canadian Solar and Astronergy all have Pakistan-facing offices or authorised importers who will confirm a serial against the production database. Send a photo of the label and ask for batch confirmation. Genuine importers answer this within a day or two because it protects their own channel. Do this at delivery, not after installation
Once panels are bolted to a structure two storeys up, checking serials means sending someone onto the roof with a torch. Photograph every label while the pallet is still on the trolley outside your gate. Fifteen minutes of work on delivery day.
Check two: the flash test report
Factories measure every panel before it ships and record the result. That record is the flash test report, and a genuine container comes with one. It lists serial number against measured power output, open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current and fill factor.
Ask your supplier for the flash report covering your specific serials. Three outcomes tell you something:
- Report provided and serials match your photographs. Good.
- Report provided but the serials on it do not appear in your delivery. The stock was substituted somewhere in the chain.
- No report available, or a generic PDF with no serial column. Treat the batch as unverified.
Some small importers genuinely do not receive flash reports for older stock, especially clearance lots. That is not automatic proof of fraud, but it does mean the panels should be priced as unverified stock, not A-grade.

Pull the manufacturer datasheet for the exact model number, then measure the panel in front of you. Mismatches here are common because relabelling usually swaps the electrical rating without changing the physical hardware.
- Dimensions. A 585W panel is roughly 2278 x 1134 mm. A 545W panel is around 2278 x 1134 mm too on some lines, but many older 545W models are 2279 x 1134 with a different cell count. Count the cells.
- Cell count and layout. Modern 585W N-type modules are typically 156 half-cut cells in a specific busbar arrangement. If the datasheet says 156 and you count 144, the label is lying.
- Frame thickness. Datasheet gives it in millimetres, usually 30 or 35 mm. Measure with a vernier or even a ruler.
- Junction box rating. The IP rating and diode count are printed on the box. Compare to the sheet.
- Weight. A 585W module runs about 27 to 32 kg. A suspiciously light panel usually means thinner glass.
Voc is the one measurement worth doing electrically before the panels go up. Put a multimeter across the MC4 connectors of a single panel in full sun with nothing connected. The reading should sit within a couple of percent of the datasheet Voc, adjusted for temperature. If a panel labelled 585W reads several volts low, ask questions before it is installed. The Hall Road and Badami Bagh reality
Most solar equipment in Lahore passes through a small number of importers, then out through the Hall Road electronics market, the Badami Bagh trade cluster and a spread of showrooms along Ferozepur Road and Multan Road. The markets themselves are not the problem. Some of the most reliable suppliers in the city trade out of two-room offices there.
What the market structure does create is layers. A homeowner in Model Town buys from a contractor, who buys from a dealer, who buys from a sub-importer, who bought a clearance lot from a primary importer. By the fourth layer nobody can produce a flash report, and everyone genuinely believes the stock is A-grade because that is what they were told.
Two practical consequences. First, the shorter the chain between you and the importer, the easier verification gets. Second, cash-and-carry deals with no invoice give you no route to any warranty at all. An invoice with the model number, serial range and grade written on it is your only paper trail. Insist on it even if it costs a little more.
Seasonal note worth knowing: stock quality is at its worst in April, May and June when demand spikes before summer and importers empty warehouses. If your install can wait until September, both pricing and stock quality tend to be better. That timing point matters more than most buyers realise, and it interacts with current panel pricing in Lahore.
What happens if you already bought B-grade
This is the part most articles skip. Suppose the panels are up, the system works, and a year later you suspect the grade is not what you paid for. Realistically, what can you do?
Legal recourse in Pakistan for this is slow and rarely worth it below a few hundred thousand rupees. The consumer court route exists but takes time and requires the invoice to actually name the grade, which is exactly the document most buyers never got.
The practical path is measurement. Get a clamp meter reading of string current at solar noon on a clear day and compare against expected output for your array size. If a 10kW array is consistently peaking at 7.2kW in clear March conditions with clean glass, something is wrong. That evidence gives you a strong position with the installer, and if the shortfall is real, adding two or three extra panels is usually cheaper than replacing the array. A repair and diagnostics visit can confirm the numbers before you argue with anyone.
The uncomfortable truth is that B-grade panels installed properly still work. They degrade faster, they lose maybe 5 to 8 percent from day one, and they have no warranty. For some buyers who paid a genuine B-grade price, that is an acceptable outcome. For anyone who paid A-grade money, it is a loss that is difficult to recover.
A short verification routine
Before delivery, get the model number and grade written into the quote. On delivery day, photograph every label and every internal barcode. Request the flash report against those serials. Measure one panel against the datasheet. Meter the Voc of two panels in sun. Keep the invoice.
That routine costs about an hour spread across the job. Against a system that will run for two decades, it is the cheapest insurance available. Getting the grade right on day one matters more on a small roof than a large one. Standard installation work should include serial documentation as a matter of course.
