Most people here start with a number, not a system

The typical Al-Kabir Town enquiry does not begin with "I want 5 kW". It begins with "I have three lakh, what can you do". That is a perfectly sensible way to buy solar, and it deserves a proper answer rather than being talked upward into a system the household cannot afford.

Al-Kabir Town, spread along Raiwind Road across its phases, is mostly 3 marla, 5 marla, and 8 marla houses built in the last fifteen years. Bills run PKR 9,000 to PKR 25,000 in the shoulder months and climb hard in June and July once the ACs come on. Roofs are regular, streets take a delivery truck, and the construction is modern enough that structural surprises are rare. It is an easy area to work in, which keeps installation costs at the lower end.

Phase one: the PKR 3 lakh system that actually earns

Phase two: adding storage when the money allows

The second phase for most Al-Kabir Town households is a battery, usually twelve to twenty-four months after the panels go up. This is the phase that ends dependence on a separate UPS and covers evening outages.

Phase three: more panels, if the roof allows

Households that grow, add a room upstairs, or install another AC usually come back for panels rather than a bigger inverter. A 3 kW hybrid inverter typically accepts a little more DC than its rated AC output, so two extra panels often go on without any inverter change. Beyond that, the inverter has to move up to 5 kW at PKR 165,000, and the old 3 kW unit either goes to a relative's house or sells second-hand.

This is the part worth planning honestly at phase one. A household that already knows it will need 5 kW within two years is usually better off buying the 5 kW inverter at the start, because the incremental cost is PKR 70,000 while replacing later effectively wastes the PKR 95,000 already spent. Roof space, and the water tank problem

A 3 kW array needs about 220 to 260 square feet clear. A 5 kW needs 380 to 420. On a 5 marla Al-Kabir Town house both usually fit, but the overhead water tank sits in an awkward spot on a lot of these plots, often near the middle of the slab where the plumbing riser came up.

Two options. Work around it with a split layout, which is free but wastes roof. Or build an elevated frame over the tank at PKR 12,000 per kW instead of PKR 7,000, which on a 3 kW system means an extra PKR 15,000 and recovers the whole area underneath, keeping it usable for washing lines and summer sleeping. Most families here pick the elevated frame once they see what it saves.

Should net metering be part of the plan?

For a 3 kW system in Al-Kabir Town, usually not. Net metering costs PKR 15,000 in paperwork and takes six to ten weeks with LESCO, and under 2026 net billing rules exported units earn around PKR 11 while imported units cost PKR 48 to PKR 65. A small system barely exports in the first place, since almost everything it makes gets used in the house the same hour.

The honest downside of buying in phases

Phasing costs more in total than buying the complete system at once. A crew has to come back, some cabling and labour gets repeated, and battery and panel prices in two years are not predictable. Expect the phased route to cost 8 to 15 percent more overall than a single install.

What phasing buys is affordability now instead of waiting three years while paying full LESCO bills the whole time. For most households in this area that trade is clearly worth it. Just do it with open eyes rather than being told it is free.

The other caveat is expectation setting on summer bills. A 3 kW system on a house running two ACs in July will not produce a small bill. It will take a PKR 26,000 bill down to maybe PKR 14,000. Maintenance a small system still needs

Raiwind Road carries constant traffic and the surrounding area is still partly agricultural, which means dust. Panels here lose 8 to 12 percent of output when dirty, and through the December to February smog they lose more on top of the seasonal decline covered in the winter output article.
