A 2 kanal job is a small commercial install wearing a house
Two kanal is 1,000 square yards. Once a build reaches that size in DHA Phase 6 and 7, Bahria Town's larger sectors, the older Cantt bungalows and parts of Gulberg, the electrical work stops resembling a domestic job. Sanctioned loads of 30 to 50 kW, three phase distribution boards with sub-boards on each floor, a dedicated pump circuit, a generator with an automatic transfer switch, and sometimes a lift.
The solar system has to be designed against that reality, not against a bill total. Crews that only do 5 marla and 10 marla work will size this correctly by accident at best. Anyone quoting a 2 kanal house over the phone without seeing the distribution board is guessing.
The load sheet, including the parts nobody lists
What an occupied 2 kanal house in Lahore actually runs:
- Seven to ten split ACs across two floors and a basement, often one ducted unit
- A tube well or 3 hp submersible for the lawn and the underground tank
- A booster pump keeping pressure in upstairs bathrooms
- Two to three fridges, a deep freezer, and a second kitchen
- Lawn and facade lighting running eleven hours a night, often 600W to 900W in total
- A servant block with its own AC, fridge, fan and geyser
- Basement dehumidification through July and August
- Electric geysers in winter, which quietly double the December bill
Twelve month averages come out at 2,800 to 4,500 units. July can pass 5,500 units on a full house. At the PKR 48 to PKR 65 per unit range across LESCO's unprotected slabs, plus taxes and fuel adjustment, that is a summer bill in the region of PKR 280,000 to PKR 350,000. The size of that number is why 2 kanal owners rarely argue about a three million rupee solar budget.
Three phase is mandatory at this size
Not a preference. A 25 kW single phase inverter does not exist in any brand worth fitting, the house connection is already three phase, and LESCO will not approve a net metering file where the phase configuration of the inverter does not match the service. The design has to allocate loads and backup circuits across R, Y and B so no phase carries a disproportionate share.
Where this gets missed: the servant block and the pump are often on one phase, and if the backup board is built lazily, that phase carries the whole night load while the other two idle. The inverter reports an imbalance fault and the owner assumes the equipment is faulty. It is not. It is the board. Design detail is covered on the installation service page.
How the arrays get split across a stepped roof
Two kanal roofs are never one flat plane. There is a main slab over the bedrooms, a lower slab over the lounge or the porch, a mumty with a bathroom, two or three tank platforms, and frequently an existing solar water heater sitting exactly where the best string would go.
A 25 kW system on such a roof usually ends up as three or four separate arrays, each on its own MPPT input so that shading on one does not drag down the others. That is more structure, more cable and more labour than the same 25 kW on a clean factory shed. It also means the DC run to the inverter room can exceed 60 metres, which needs cable sized up to keep voltage drop under two percent.
Why elevated mounting earns its cost
Elevated structures run at PKR 12,000 per kW against PKR 7,000 for standard. On 25 kW that is PKR 125,000 extra, and on a 2 kanal house it is almost always worth it. The frames clear the tank platforms and the mumty, they let the array sit above the existing water heater rather than around it, and the space underneath stays usable for storage or a roof sitting area. They also keep panels off a slab that gets hot enough in June to hurt module efficiency.

Going beyond 30 kW on a domestic connection stops making financial sense. Under the 2026 export rules, surplus units sold to LESCO earn far below the retail tariff, so capacity built purely to export does not recover. Substituting 645W bifacial modules at PKR 21,000 cuts the count to 39 and simplifies the structure slightly. The tube well changes the schedule
A 3 hp submersible draws about 2.5 kW while running and a 5 hp closer to 4 kW. On a 25 kW array that is nothing during the day and a serious problem at night. Pumping 20 kWh of stored battery energy into a lawn at 11 pm is the single most wasteful thing a 2 kanal solar system can do.
Two rules that work. Pump between 10 am and 3 pm when the array is producing surplus anyway, and put the pump circuit on the grid side of the backup board so it physically cannot run off battery. Most owners resist the second one until they see the first month's battery cycle count. Net metering and sanctioned load
LESCO will not approve a system larger than the sanctioned load on the connection. Plenty of 2 kanal houses have a sanctioned load of 15 or 20 kW from when they were built, even though the actual demand is far higher. Applying for 25 kW of solar on a 20 kW sanctioned load means a load enhancement application first, which adds three to six weeks and a security deposit calculated on the additional kW.
Do that step before ordering equipment, not after. The file itself needs the CNIC matching the bill name, ownership proof, a single line diagram, and the equipment list with model numbers and certificates. Maintenance is a real line item at 25 kW
Forty three panels across four arrays collect a lot of Lahore. Houses near the canal, near Ferozepur Road, or anywhere with construction on the plot next door see output drop 15 percent within a month in the dry season. These systems need washing every three to four weeks from March to June, and again after the smog sets in.
Beyond cleaning, an annual check should cover DC connector torque, structure bolt tightness after monsoon wind, earthing pit resistance, breaker condition, and battery cell balance. Where 2 kanal solar disappoints people
The honest caveat: a 20 kWh battery on a house running nine ACs will not keep the whole house cool through a night. It carries lights, fans, fridges and two or three AC circuits for four to five hours. Owners who expected the entire estate to behave normally during an outage feel let down, and the fault is in the expectation, not the equipment. Backing up nine ACs overnight would need 50 kWh plus, which is well over PKR 2.8 million of storage on its own and needs replacing within a decade.
The second disappointment is the July bill. Even at 25 kW, a house consuming 5,500 units in July will still receive a substantial bill. The saving is large in rupees and unimpressive as a percentage, because peak consumption outruns peak generation by a wide margin in that month. Booking a 2 kanal survey
The site survey fee is PKR 3,000 and it is adjusted in the final installation bill. On 2 kanal it takes two to three hours. The engineer maps every roof level, measures shading through the day, opens the main and sub distribution boards, checks phase balance and existing earthing, traces the generator transfer switch, records pump ratings from their nameplates, and confirms the sanctioned load against the bill.
