A man phones from a rented portion in Samanabad. His bill has crossed PKR 18,000 and someone in the neighbourhood has quoted him a complete solar system for three lakh, batteries included. He wants to know whether that is possible or whether he is being taken for a ride.
The answer is that it is entirely possible, and that what he will receive is not the same product as the systems quoted at seven or eight lakh. Both are called solar. That is where the similarity ends.
What PKR 300,000 buys, item by item
Here is an actual teardown of a three lakh package as quoted around Lahore, against what the equivalent honest specification costs.

The gap on the panel line alone is PKR 39,000. That is where most of the saving comes from, and it is also where most of the trouble comes from.
B-grade panels, explained properly
B-grade is not a formal category. It is a bucket that holds several different things, and they are not equally bad.
- Cosmetic rejects. A scratch on the frame, a printing error on the label. Electrically fine. These are genuinely good value if you can confirm that is all that is wrong.
- Flash test rejects. Panels that measured below their rated output on the production line. A 585W label producing 540W. The system quietly underperforms forever and nobody notices, because nobody measures.
- Micro cracked stock. Cells fractured during handling or shipping. The panel works on day one and degrades far faster than a sound panel, sometimes losing double digit percentages within three summers.
- Recovered or refurbished. Panels pulled off older installations abroad, cleaned, relabelled. Age unknown, remaining life unknown, warranty nonexistent.
- Outright counterfeit. A well known brand name printed on hardware that never came from that factory. The serial will not verify on the manufacturer portal.
Lahore's panel market moves a lot of volume, and plenty of it is legitimate. Current honest rates sit at PKR 19,500 for a Tier-1 585W, PKR 21,000 for a 645W bifacial, and PKR 25,450 for an Astronergy 585W N-type. How to check a panel before it goes on the roof
Do this on the ground, in daylight, before anyone climbs a ladder. Read the serial on the back label and verify it on the manufacturer's own portal, not on a link the seller sends. Tilt the panel and look across the glass at a low angle for hairline cell cracks and mismatched cell colour. Press the frame corners and see whether they flex, since thin frames buckle under Lahore wind loads. Ask for the flash test report that matches the serial batch.
Fake and relabelled inverters
The inverter is where cheap gets genuinely unsafe. A branded 5kW hybrid sits around PKR 165,000 and a 3kW around PKR 95,000. Units at half that price are usually generic boards in a branded looking case.
What is missing inside is not obvious from a photograph:
- Anti islanding protection. When LESCO cuts supply for line work, a compliant inverter shuts down within milliseconds. A non compliant one can keep pushing power onto a line a technician believes is dead.
- Proper surge protection. Lahore's pre monsoon storms in June bring lightning induced surges. This is the single most common inverter killer in the city.
- Thermal design. A June afternoon on a Lahore roof is punishing. Undersized heatsinks and cheap fans mean derating at exactly the hour of peak generation, or a shutdown.
- MPPT quality. A weak tracker on a partially shaded array can cost 10 to 15 percent of daily yield.
- Firmware and support. No app, no updates, no service centre when it stops.
There is a further practical consequence. LESCO net metering approval requires equipment that meets the applicable technical requirements. Mounting is the least glamorous line on any quotation and the one that causes the most expensive failures. Proper galvanised structure runs PKR 7,000 per kW on a standard flat roof and PKR 12,000 per kW where the array has to be raised over a water tank, stair block or car porch. A budget build spends a third of that on painted angle iron.
Painted mild steel on a Lahore roof starts showing rust at the welds within two monsoons. By year four the fasteners are seized and the frame cannot be adjusted or removed without cutting. Worse, a light frame with inadequate ballast or anchoring is a wind hazard, and the pre monsoon squalls that hit Lahore in late June regularly lift underspecified arrays. Panels that slide off a three storey roof in Mughalpura or Shad Bagh land in a street.
This is not a theoretical risk and it is the reason the installation service specifies structure by wind loading rather than by price.
Why cheap costs more by year three
Follow the two systems from the table forward. Both start on a five marla roof in Iqbal Town with an equivalent household load.

Five years in, the cheap route has cost PKR 178,000 more, delivered less electricity throughout, and left the household with hardware nobody wants to touch. This is not an argument for buying the most expensive system available. It is an argument for not buying below a floor.
The minimum specification worth buying
If money is genuinely tight, here is where the line sits. Below this, walk away.
- Tier-1 panels with verifiable serials, even if the array is small. Six panels of real 585W beat ten panels of doubtful 550W.
- A branded inverter with a service presence in Lahore and a written warranty against a serial number.
- Galvanised structure engineered for wind, properly anchored, not sitting on loose bricks.
- UV rated DC cable, correctly sized, in conduit or trunking. Surge protection and a real earth.
- Net metering paperwork included and completed, at around PKR 15,000.

When cheap is actually the right answer
The honest caveat, because none of this is absolute. A minimal system genuinely makes sense in a few situations. A rented portion where the tenant may move within two years and wants something portable. A shop or workshop needing daylight running only, with no grid export ambition. A tube well or a farm room outside the city. A small standby setup for a household that only wants fans and lights during outages, where an IPS comparison is the more useful reading.
In those cases nobody should be pushed toward a seven lakh hybrid. What matters is that the buyer knows what they are getting: a short life appliance, not a twenty year asset. The off grid service page covers small standalone builds properly.
